This Saturday, Fort Worth’s cultural side will shine during its 6th annual Day in the District. Nine museum and cultural district destinations will offer FREE admission AND FREE family friendly performances, activities, and other special events all day.

Visit all 9 participating Cultural District locations PLUS Get Complimentary Transportation!
FREE transportation within the Cultural District will be provided by the
Fort Worth Transportation Authority (The T), making it easy to enjoy
a slice of every venue during this all day event. Free destinations include:

  2. Botanical Research Institute of Texas (BRIT)

  3. Kimbell Art Museum
  4. Fort Worth Botanic Garden

It’s hard to believe that it’s already time for September’s 3rd Thursday FREE Jazz Series (but we are so glad it’s here!)…

If you are a jazz fan, then you will want to tune into the Third Thursday Jazz Series, sponsored by the Fort Worth Jazz Society and hosted in the setting of the beautiful downtown library.  This FREE monthly live concert series continues this month (runs through October) and features an outstanding list of nationally and locally known talent.

Fred Hersch Trio ~ Featured Thursday, September 15.
The series continues Thursday, September 15, and features Fred Hersch, an acclaimed jazz pianist, composer, and 3-time Grammy nominee.  Recognized for both his ability to re-interpret the classics as well as his outstanding original works, Hersch is simply a master jazz pianist.  The New York Times refers to Hersch as …a pianist, composer and conceptualist of rare imaginative power.” Learn more about Fred Hersch and hear samples of his music, here.

Ft. Worth’s annual Fall Gallery Night is a FREE,  “Open House” event across almost 50 locations in Fort Worth and Arlington. Participating venues include all types, from the legendary Fort Worth museums in the cultural district to the chic art gallery showrooms of the south side ~ all in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.  Even the Fort Worth Botanic Garden joins the celebration of our community’s cultural richness and visual arts with their Art in the Garden event.

Many locations will host live music and light h’ors d’oeuvres, and you’ll have the opportunity to mingle with many of the featured artists.

Art. Bands. Food. Fun. Free. Find it all at 50 Fest, a free celebration of 50 years at the Amon Carter.  Things to do at 50 Fest:

  • Visit your favorite works of art.
  • Create your own masterpieces.
  • Boogie to live music by the Marshall Ford Swing Band and Del Castillo.
  • Blow bubbles and hula hoop with your friends on the plaza.
  • Cast your vote for the ultimate Amon Carter anniversary cake.
  • Say cheese in a photo booth.
  • Munch on hotdogs and ice cream.

To help visitors stay cool at the event, they’ll have shaded areas, misters, bottled water and ice cream outdoors plus you can really cool off when you step inside the galleries that are kept at 70 degrees. All ages welcome. No reservations required. Please leave your alcohol, coolers, and pets at home.

If you want to add some extra fun to your family evening, plan to view the fireworks from the Gaylord Texan Resort parking garage roof ~ a great viewing platform ~ and they will have a DJ, games for kids, and food and beverages for purchase.

:: FREE ~ Cosmic Show Tonight: FREE & Live From Your
Backyard!  (a.k.a. The Perseid Meteor Shower)

Take in the Perseid Meteor Shower that will sparkle the big Texas sky tonight, with a star-gazing party from the comfort of your own backyard (or for the best view, go to the edge of town to get away from the city lights). The Perseids Shower is one of the best meteor showers to observe, producing up to 60-100 meteors per hour at the peak which takes place Friday and Saturday during the predawn hours.

What: You will be able to see the Perseids without aid of a telescope ~ but perhaps not without coffee since the peak viewing time takes place between 11pm and the wee hours of 4am.   Look approximately half way up the sky facing northeast. Learn more about viewing the Perseids here.
Where: From the comfort of your own backyard OR even better, head to the outskirts of town, away from city lights for best Perseids viewing.
When: Friday and Saturday, August 12 & 13  between 11pm-4am is the peak of the meteor shower show.  If interrupting your sleep tonight is not in the plans ~ not to worry ~ you should be able to see Perseids meteor activity from now until August 24.

The Circus is Coming To Keller, August 26 & 27

If you are a jazz fan, then you will want to tune into the Third Thursday Jazz Series, sponsored by the Fort Worth Jazz Society and hosted in the setting of the beautiful downtown library.  This FREE monthly live concert series continues this month (runs through October) and features an outstanding list of nationally and locally known talent.

Duane Durrett Quartet ~ Featured Tonight, July 21.
The series continues tonight, Thursday, July 21, and features Duane Durrett and his quartet. This stellar group will perform the music of John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman. This performance features Victor Cager on vocals and Mack Goldsbury on saxophone.

  • September 15: Fred Hersch Trio. The featured act of our series, Down Beat magazine calls Hersch a “brilliant composer and pianist.”
  • October 20: Paul Unger Septet. Unger’s group will perform “Pathway to Fusion,” the music of Miles Davis from the ’60s and ’70s.

Cowtown Farmers Market, Fort Worth’s producer-only farmers market, puts local food (grown within 150 miles of Fort Worth) in the spotlight at its annual festival held on Saturday.  Besides fresh produce, you can score lots of other goodies like fresh bread, goat milk cheese, hot tamales and more.  Insiders Tip:  Get there early for best choices.

Festivities will include cooking demos by the Culinary School of Fort Worth, Cookbook signing by Chef Jon Bonnell of Bonnell’s restaurant, tasting booths, prize drawings, live music, balloons for the kids, and more.

:: 8th Annual Modern Dance Festival at the Modern
Now Through
July 24, 2011

The 8th annual Modern Dance Festival at The Modern Art Museum in Fort Worth continues  with Aerial dance company Project IN Motion (Las Cruces, New Mexico). They will perform The Palace at Night near the reflecting pond at the museum. Palace at Night is a vignette of five aerial and terrestrial dance pieces choreographed using an elaborate sculptural apparatus where dancers will climb and twist in bungees and hammocks.

A variety of other festival events are scheduled through July 24 and include lectures, site-specific performances, and films from the Dance On Camera festival of New York City.
