FREE THURSDAY — Outdoor Movie Vertigo at Fort Worth’s Amon Carter Museum

Vertigo at Amon Carter Museum

Pack a picnic, grab some friends, and watch Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo (1958; PG) on the Amon Carter Museum lawn ~ the first film in their FREE Sunset Cinema outdoor film series. Lawn chairs, blankets, and coolers are welcome (lawn only). However, no glass bottles, alcohol, or pets please. The lawn opens at 6 p.m. Come early and enjoy a tour of the museum from 7 to 7:45 p.m. The film starts at 8:30 p.m.  No reservations are required.

Decorate a miniature cupcake to look like a berry pie and enjoy your creation on the museum’s front porch.

Food Trucks and Outdoor Fun

Have fun on the museum’s lawn by tossing a beach ball, throwing a flickering Frisbee with friends, or grabbing a bite to eat from a food truck*.

Music with Eric Martin
5:30–9:30 p.m.
Enjoy the melodic sounds of the xylophone during an ongoing performance by local percussionist Eric Martin.

Selections from Food Design, a film by Martin Hablesreiter and Sonja Stummerer
5:30–9:30 p.m.
Food Design (2010) takes a look at the secret chambers of a major manufacturer of food, where designers and scientists are defining tomorrow’s favorite culinary treat. It shows how form, color, smell, consistency, the sounds made during eating, manufacturing technique, history, and stories are all aspects of food and eating that both influence food design and are created by it. This film includes subtitles.

Help those in need by donating a non-perishable food item to the Tarrant Area Food Bank. For each item donated, a ticket will be entered in a raffle to win an Amon Carter swag bag!

Family Tour
5:45–6:30 p.m.
Join the Amon Carter’s professional gallery teachers to discover works of art, share your observations, and get creative in the galleries. This tour is best for children ages 12 and under with their adult companions.

Dining Through the Ages with Anne Paup, Etiquette Consultant
Sessions begin at 6, 7, and 8 p.m.
Mind your manners and learn the basics of dining etiquette and the history behind it during this fun demonstration with Etiquette and Protocol Consultant Anne Paup.

Cheese Tastings with Elizabeth Northern, Owner of Magnolia Cheese Company
Tastings begin at 6:30, 7:30, and 8:30 p.m.
Taste and learn about unique local cheeses during this delectable presentation with cheesemonger Elizabeth Northern, proprietor of Magnolia Cheese Company in Fort Worth’s Near Southside neighborhood.
Please note: There are a limited number of seats per session. Free tickets to sessions will be available in Gallery 21 thirty minutes before each session begins.

Adult Tour

Join Margi Conrads, deputy director of art and research, as she shares her favorite works of art in the special exhibition Art and Appetite: American Painting, Culture, and Cuisine.

Kick off your summer with a weekend filled with free music under the stars! The third annual Downtown Arlington Center Stage Music Festival runs May 23-25 with a true Texas original, Bob Schneider; Texas blues guitar legend, Jimmie Vaughan; and more. Opening acts will perform before each headliner, plus the Levitt will be surrounded by food and art vendors — the perfect way to start the summer!

Tip:  Be sure to bring along a lawn chair or blanket to comfortably enjoy the outdoor entertainment. Snacks or a picnic dinner, and beverages are allowed, but no glass containers please.

Frugal shopping tip: This is a great spot to tap into local experts’ knowledge about gardening with herbs, as well as find a vast selection of native plants & herbs at great prices.  My favorite finds have been local artisan made soap created from all natural ingredients ($1 to $2 a bar) and clean burning soy candles scented with essential oils.

The Amon Carter Museum of American Art is offering a fun and FREE event packed with activities for all ages.  Everyone is welcome to experience the Amon Carter at night with art making, tours, music, films, interactive demonstrations, and more inspired by the special exhibition Art and Appetite: American Painting, Culture, and Cuisine. No reservations are required.

Decorate a reusable lunch bag
Create magnetic miniature artworks

Art Search (5:30–9:30 p.m.)
Work up an appetite by finding food-themed artworks in the galleries. Pick up a question sheet (both adult and family versions are available), complete the search, and claim your prize!

Cupcake Decorating with Central Market (5:30–9:30 p.m.)
Decorate a miniature cupcake to look like a berry pie and enjoy your creation on the museum’s front porch.

One of our favorite annual events, Main St. Fort Worth Arts Festival is finally here! This juried art fest showcases over 200 of the nation’s finest artists and is staged around the streets of downtown (with the new Sundance Square Plaza acting as the main hub). The festival also features over 300 performances throughout the weekend, including live concerts in just about every music genre — from R&B to country to jazz.  Even the Fort Worth Symphony will be performing (more info below).

It’s a family friendly event with an enormous variety of amazing art, savory food, performance artists, kids activities, and street performers.

:: Celebrity Softball Double Header and Concert Benefiting
Wounded Warrior and Snowball Express.

Saturday, The Airpower Foundation will present Salute to the Warrior, a celebrity softball double-header and concert that will benefit the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team and Snowball Express. Softball teams will be made up of celebrities as well as former and current professional athletes from Major League Baseball and the National Football League.

Some of the athletes participating are Patrick Crayton, Cory Procter and Isaiah Stanback formerly of the Dallas Cowboys as well as Kevin Mench from the Texas Rangers, and many more from the New Orleans Saints, San Francisco 49’ers, Washington Redskins, Baltimore Ravens, St Louis Rams, and Atlanta Falcons. The event features parachute jumpers as well as the opportunity to meet, the athletes and heroes. Country music recording star Matt Snook and comedian Bobby Henline will perform after the games.

FREE Drawing From the Collection classes for kids:  Two sessions of this free program for children are offered, one for ages 5 to 8 and one for ages 9 to 12. Each session is led by an artist who takes participants through informal drawing exercises that relate to works in the Modern’s galleries. Children under the age of six must be accompanied by an adult during the program. Bring a sketchbook and pencils. Attendance is limited; early arrival is encouraged. This Saturday, bring your child to Home Depot’s Kids Workshop to help them learn a new woodworking skill and build their very own DreamWorks bank project to take home. Workshops teach children do-it-yourself skills, tool safety and instill a sense of pride and accomplishment.  All kids get to keep their craft, receive a FREE certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorative pin.  All workshops are free, but you should probably show up early to insure you have a kit for your little ones.

I brought home several new favorites from this Winter Resort collection sale ~ perfect pieces for this transition season.  Some of my “must take home” bargain finds came from the huge selection of super flattering  “slim-sation” pants and jeans in  lots of colors and textures (these have a little inside tummy smoothing panel that make you look a size smaller ~  all slim-sation styles are on sale for $40, regularly $74).  This sale also features more than two full rows of Tru Luxe embellished jeans at 60% off retail, an abundance of jackets in seemingly every style and color, long and mid weight sweaters,  great wardrobe basics, and “show-stopping” statement pieces.

The Modern Art Museum ~ Fort Worth Kids Drawing Program

FREE Drawing From the Collection classes for kids:  Two sessions of this free program for children are offered, one for ages 5 to 8 and one for ages 9 to 12. Each session is led by an artist who takes participants through informal drawing exercises that relate to works in the Modern’s galleries. Children under the age of six must be accompanied by an adult during the program. Bring a sketchbook and pencils. Attendance is limited; early arrival is encouraged. A sign-up sheet is located at the information desk.

FREE Drawing From the Collection class for adults:  Learn with local artists as they lead free, informal basic drawing classes in the galleries. This class is open to adults at all skill levels. Fort Worth’s cultural side will shine during its annual Day in the District open-house event ~ Saturday, September 28th. Ten museum and cultural district destinations will offer FREE admission AND FREE family friendly performances, activities, and other special events throughout the day.

Enjoy FREE transportation to participating cultural district locations, tooThe T will provide complimentary transportation throughout the cultural district from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., making it easy to enjoy a slice of every venue during this all day event.
