ESPN College Football — Live From Sundance Square in Fort Worth All Week!

ESPN college football at Sundance Square

ESPN is making its last stop in Sundance Square for coverage of the inaugural College Football National Championship.  Now through Monday, January 12, you can see your favorite ESPN sportcasters (including Tim Tebow!) broadcast live as they provide daily college football coverage from Sundance Square.

Rece Davis will serve as the lead studio host for all of ESPN’s College Football Playoff coverage and will be joined by hosts Chris Cotter, John Saunders and Joe Tessitore. Analysts on hand include Todd Blackledge, Mack Brown, Lee Corso, Butch Davis, Joey Galloway, Brian Griese, Kirk Herbstreit, Lou Holtz, Desmond Howard, Danny Kanell, Mark May, Todd McShay, Jesse Palmer, David Pollack, Tim Tebow and George Whitfield with reporters Brett McMurphy, Sam Ponder, Tom Rinaldi and Gene Wojciechowski. Several current head football coaches will also join ESPN’s coverage throughout the week.

The jolly old elf will be waiting to hear Christmas wishes at his home near the towering 58-foot Sundance Square Christmas tree, beautifully adorned with thousands of lights. Fort Worth Sister Cities International invites you to take your photo with Santa and is offering guests a photo with Santa for a $10 donation (cash only please) which will go towards youth programs. You are also welcome to bring your personal camera to take photos if you prefer.

The Fort Worth Academy of Fine Arts and Dorothy Shaw Bell Choir will perform The Littlest Wiseman, a pageant of the Nativity presented December 6 to 14. This Christmas gift to the Fort Worth community has been in production for over 50 years and is an annual tradition for many families. Get a taste of farm life just steps away from the heart of the city at historic Nash Farm in Grapevine and enjoy their FREE Christmas event!  Visitors will be led by docents through the farmhouse and the farm to experience how Grapevine’s earliest settlers celebrated Christmas in Texas during the latter part of the 19th Century. Tours will be led from the pole barn, where visitors can enjoy hot cider and cookies, then to the front door of the farmhouse, through the parlor, bedroom, dining room and kitchen, and finally outside by the burning yule log and back to the pole barn.

This floating festival begins at Twin Coves Marina and picks up entries at each marina including Scott’s Landing and Silver Lake.

The Modern Art Museum ~ Fort Worth Kids Drawing Program

FREE Drawing From the Collection classes for kids:  Two sessions of this free program for children are offered, one for ages 5 to 8 and one for ages 9 to 12. Each session is led by an artist who takes participants through informal drawing exercises that relate to works in the Modern’s galleries. Children under the age of six must be accompanied by an adult during the program. Bring a sketchbook and pencils. Attendance is limited; early arrival is encouraged. A sign-up sheet can be found at the information desk.

The Kimbell Art Museum has had the good fortune of having two related masterpieces in its permanent collection — Caravaggio’s Cardsharps and Georges de La Tour’s Cheat with the Ace of Clubs, allowing an unprecedented side-by-side comparison.  The Friday Evening lecture by Claire Barry, director of conservation for the Kimbell, will compare and explore the relation and techniques behind these two iconic paintings. Grapevine Butterfly Festival

Bring the entire family to celebrate the migration of the monarch butterfly from Canada to Mexico by way of Grapevine. The 17th Annual Butterfly Flutterby is a free, family-friendly event held at the Grapevine Botanical Gardens.

The day begins with a Butterfly Costume Parade that starts at East Wall and Jenkins Streets. After the parade, participate in butterfly crafts, butterfly exhibits, the Migration Station, interactive games, a scavenger hunt, face painting and other activities in the Botanical Gardens. Butterfly Releases will take place at 10:45 a.m., 11:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in the Grapevine Botanical Gardens.

2014 State Fair of Texas Discount Tickets Savings Guide — September 26 to October 19

Yes!  It is finally beginning to feel like autumn in Texas and that means it is time for the annual Texas State Fair! If you are seeking to take your family at the lowest cost possible, be sure and check out our savings guide below.  We can help you save a bundle and if you plan it right, you might be able to attend for FREE!

Texas State Fair Events Begin Friday, September 26
(Runs September 26 to October 19, 2014)

This year’s line up of events is as extensive as ever.  Free concerts (with admission) include: The Swon Brothers — finalists of NBC’s “The Voice”, Fantasia, Lucy Hale, Kool & The Gang, and more great bands. Lots of Ways to Save on Tickets
General admission fair tickets are normally $17/person.  Plan ahead, and you can enjoy your day at a deep discount (or even attend for FREE) with one of the many ways to save on your tickets. Following is a roundup of discount options:

1. Kroger Grocery Store is the official site for advanced discount ticket purchases. We do recommend calling the Kroger service desk before stopping by to purchase tickets, as not all locations offer these tickets:

  • Advance General Admission$15.50  Valid for any one-day admission.
  • Advance Season Pass: $34.95. This is only sold at Kroger, and not available at the State Fair admission gates.  This is a great deal if you are going to make multiple visits during the fair.  This season pass includes: unlimited visits for 2014 and a one-day companion ticket (good Monday-Friday).

2. September 26, Opening Day $6 Admission with a Food Donation to the North Texas Food Bank Bring a full 20 oz. bottle of Dasani water (or any Coca-Cola product) for donation to the North Texas Food Bank containers at Fair admission gates and get in for $6 per (per donation) per person.

3.  Tuesdays, Dr Pepper Day: $5 Admission & 6 Coupon Rides ~ On Tuesdays, bring an empty Dr Pepper can to the admission gate and enter for $5. Most rides (excluding the Thrillway and the Texas Star) are 6 coupons as well.

4.  Wednesdays, Kroger Food Drive Day: 3 Cans for $3 Admission ~ When you bring 3 cans of food (per person) for area food banks, get admission for $3.

5.  Thursdays, Coke Day: $6 Admission ~ Bring an empty 20 oz. bottle of a Coca-Cola product and enter the Fair for $6 admission.

6.  Thursdays, Seniors Day: FREE Admission ~ Senior Citizens 60 years and older get into the State Fair FREE each Thursday.

7.  Fridays, $5 OFF with KISS-FM coupon ~ Download and print a coupon from the KISS-FM  website  (here) to get $12 admission with the coupon.  Discount is off of general admission only, when purchased at a State Fair of Texas admission gate with coupon

8. Fridays – Fort Worth Star Telegram Press Pass Savings: Buy One Get One FREE ~ Present the coupon found inside Friday’s Star-Telegram AND your valid Press Pass Card when purchasing a General Admission Ticket at any State Fair of Texas® ticket booth at the regular price of $17.00 AND receive a second ticket free.

9. Friday, October 3, Fort Worth Star Telegram Gold Press Pass Savings: 2 FREE ADMISSION Tickets ~ Present the coupon found inside Friday’s Star-Telegram AND your valid GOLD Press Pass Card at any State Fair of Texas ticket booth to receive two free General Admission tickets, valid Friday, Oct. 3, 2014 only.

10. After 5pm any day, Dr Pepper Day: $8 Admission ~ After 5pm, admission is $8  when you bring an empty Dr Pepper can to any State Fair admission gate.

11. Any Day $2 Off, Dart GoPass ~ Buy discounted tickets to the State Fair right from your DART GoPass app. Adult tickets are just $15 and child/senior tickets are $11.  You can also buy a DART pass to the Fair. Both your DART pass and your Fair tickets will be right there on your phone and scanned at the gates.

12. Any Day $3 Off with McDonald’s coupon ~ McDonald’s offers $3 off General Admission with one of their State Fair coupons (available on tray liner or bag stuffer) any day of the Fair.  A $6 child ticket (with purchase of general admission) coupon is also distributed by McDonald’s.

13. Any Day $3 Off with Sonic promo code ~ Enter the promo code “Sonic” when you order your State Fair tickets online, to get $3 off any ticket through October 13.

14. FREE Admission From Dickies ~ Make a purchase of $75 or more worth of items from the the Dickies clothing store in Fort Worth through October 6 and you will receive two free tickets to the State Fair.

Fort Worth’s Central Library presents the exhibition, Vaquero: Genesis of the Texas Cowboy, now through October 20, 2014. The collection of more than 100 photos and artifacts explores the centuries‐old vaquero (cowboy) tradition of northern Mexico.

Exhibit highlights: Photographs from the Bill Wittliff Collection, the original model of Vaquero de Fort Worth statue (commemorates the vaqueros’ contribution to Fort Worth history), and artifacts including tools, clothing, hand‐tooled saddles, and more.
