:: Grapevine’s Main Street Days Outdoor Festival
Friday-Sunday, May 18-20, 2012

Bring the family to downtown Grapevine for a weekend festival full of fun family activities, live entertainment, food and more. Festival guests will have the opportunity to enjoy live entertainment on five stages featuring a variety of music from rock and R&B to bluegrass and country, festival foods, arts and crafts, carnival rides, and mini excursions on the Grapevine Vintage Railroad.

Plus this year’s event will include the grand opening of the new Grapevine Convention & Visitors Bureau Headquarters & Museum Complex with an inaugural performance of the new larger-than-life, 9-foot-tall animatronic characters. The action comes to life as the figures come out on the clock tower’s platform to enact a typical frontier drama.

Tonight offers the promise of a beautiful spring evening and a great time to get outside and enjoy a fun concert featuring Tom Petty Tribute band, Petty Theft. Part of NRH2O’s 2012 “Sounds of Spring” outdoor concert series, this free family event also includes a fireworks show, a kid zone with games and crafts for the kids, as well as food you can buy.  Seating for the concert is on the lawn, so don’t forget to bring your lawn chairs or picnic blankets.

Frugal shopping tip: This is a great spot to find a vast selection of native plants & herbs at great prices.  My other favorite finds have been local artisan made soap created from all natural ingredients ($1 to $2 a bar) and soy candles scented with essential oils.

2012 Cheap Summer Kids Movies in Fort Worth – Beat the Heat & Save!

Movies

Save your kids from the summer heat and have some cheap fun with these Fort Worth area summer movie series. There are lots of family friendly movies to choose from including Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who, Rio, Despicable Me, How to Train Your Dragon, The Muppets, and many more! Studio Movie Grill even offers FREE screenings for kids with special needs and their families (love this!).  

Following is a roundup of the various kids summer movies series:

:: HARKINS SUMMER MOVIE FUN
Harkins Theatres in Southlake is bringing back its 10-week Summer Movie Fun Program, Monday Through Friday mornings, from June 4 through August 10. It’s less than $1 a film ($6 for 10 movies). Find details and a list of scheduled movies at harkinstheatres.com.

:: REGAL THEATRES SUMMER MOVIE EXPRESS
Regal theatres is offering nine weeks (June 5 to August 1) of fun-filled movies for kids and parents, for $1/person! There are 18 movies to choose from, showing at 10AM each Tuesday and Wednesday. Tickets are available at the box office on the day of the show and are first-come, first-served seating. In Fort Worth, you’ll find the Summer Movie Express Family Film Festival at: Fossil Creek Stadium 11.  A portion of proceeds from the Summer Movie Express will be donated to the Will Rogers Institute. :: STUDIO MOVIE GRILL
Studio Movie Grill’s
Children’s Summer Series will run from June 4 through August 20 (Monday to Friday, 11AM) and will feature 12 different movies. Children’s tickets are $1 and adults are $2 at the theaters in Arlington, Dallas, Lewisville and Plano. In addition, Studio Movie Grill will continue its free screenings for kids with special needs and their siblings (next showing is June 16 ~ love that they do this!!) — for details, go here. :: CINEMARK/TINSELTOWN SUMMER MOVIE CLUBHOUSE

FREE Fort Worth Third Thursday Jazz Series ~ Starts This Thursday, May 17

All Jazzed Up and Someplace to Go
Take a musical journey from the 20th century roots of Jazz to the diverse sounds of the present with the Fort Worth Library’s Third Thursday Jazz Series. This five-concert series features an outstanding list of nationally and locally known talent and is FREE and open to the public. The monthly lineup offers everything from swing jazz to the blues and will include some amazing artists ~ like jazz saxophonist Brad Leali (former lead for the Harry Connick, Jr Orchestra) and grammy-award winning trombonist Robin Eubanks (collaborated with a variety of notable musicians such as Art Blakey, Barbra Streisand, The Rolling Stones and Talking Heads).

The inauguration of the 2012 series (Thursday, May 17, 6:30PM)  showcases Grammy nominated Brad Leali, former lead alto saxophonist for the Harry Connick, Jr Orchestra and director of the Count Basie orchestra. Leali’s quintet will feature the music of “The Bebop Revolution,” including toe-tapping tunes from Charlie Parker and Dizzie Gillespie.  Leali has backed up a lengthy list of artists including Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, John Legend, Mary J. Blige, Herbie Hancock, Fantasia, Billy Joel, Kid Rock, Yolanda Adams, and Brian McKnight.  He has been one of the top jazz musicians in New York City and has made numerous television appearances including The Today Show, Jay Leno Tonight Show, and Arsenio Hall.

The Brad Leali quintet performance will also feature trumpeter Ephraim Owens, Paul Unger on bass, pianist Michael Palma, and Andrew Griffith on drums.

Where: In the Gallery of the Fort Worth Central Library. You can park on the street or in the 3rd St. & Taylor Parking Garage. The parking garage is FREE after 6:00pm or if you go earlier, have your parking ticket validated at the Central Library for up to 2.5 hours free on weekdays.
Cost: FREE, no ticket required.

Third Thursday Jazz Series Monthly Lineup

  • May 17: Brad Leali Quintet. “The Bebop Revolution”  features the music of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie.
  • June 21: Victor Cager, Tatiana Mayfield, and the Duane Durrett Trio. Featuring vocalist Tatiana Mayfield, this band will perform “Singing and Swinging: Art of the Jazz Vocalist.”
  • July 19: James Shannon Quartet. “Smoking at the Library” will showcase the incredible guitar style of Wes Montgomery.
  • August 16: Adonis Rose Quintet. This Grammy Award winning drummer brings his New Orleans sound to the series.
  • September 20: Robin Eubanks Quintet.  Eubanks has been voted best trombonist in DownBeat magazine’s international critics poll five times.

:: FREE Tour de Fort Worth Bike Ride with the Mayor Betsy Price

Join cyclists from around Cowtown for a fast-paced ride around the Fort Worth Naval Air Station base. The ride, part of the mayor’s “Rolling Town Hall” series, will give participants a chance to ask the mayor questions while touring one of Fort Worth’s most important pieces of real estate. To join the free ride, bring your bike, a helmet and an official photo ID to the base’s main entrance at 226 Pumphrey Drive. Do note: while some of the mayor’s bike rides are good for children, this longer, 14-mile ride is for adults who want to get a good work out.

Bring the family to the 12th Annual Frontier Fort Days Texas heritage event where you will get to experience what it was like to live as a real wrangler on the Texas frontier. Exchange Avenue in the Stockyards will be lined with encampments of historic fort sites from around Texas. During this FREE event, you will be able to discuss frontier life with re-enactors, explore historically accurate fort camps and wagons, and enjoy soothing live music from the era. Scheduled events include infantry, artillery and cavalry demonstrations, military parades and more.

Each station will have their own special events including the opportunity to ride the train between both Fort Worth and Dallas events.  The Train Day Event will include operating locomotive and passenger car displays, tours through an Amtrak engine cab and Interurban Trolley from the 1920s, model train displays, and entertainment for the kids like balloon artists and face painting.

FREE National Train Day Event in Fort Worth & Dallas – Saturday, May 12, 2012

Bring the family and celebrate National Train Day with local events at both the Fort Worth Intermodal Transportation Center and Dallas Union Station. Each station will have their own special events including the opportunity to ride the train between both Fort Worth and Dallas events.

The Fort Worth National Train Day Event will include:

  • Operating freight locomotives and passenger cars on display from Union Pacific and BNSF Railway
  • Tours through an engine cab of an Amtrak long distance train and a restored original Interurban Trolley that ran the rails between Fort Worth and Dallas from 1924 to 1934

FREE Amon Carter Museum Family Storytime ~ Fun Summer Idea!

Here is another fun and FREE event to add to your summer calendar ~ The Amon Carter Museum will be hosting Storytime, a free public program for young children and their families on Wednesdays in June and July (except July 4), from 10:30–11:30 a.m.

This interactive event will bring the museum’s artworks to life through engaging children’s stories and related activities that focus on exploring a different color each week. After the story reading, kids will be able to create their own work of art while enjoying cookies and lemonade! Families are even encouraged to come dressed in that day’s featured color for even more fun.

 

The dates and themes are:

  • June 6 – Rockin’ Red
  • June 13 – Outrageous Orange
  • June 20 – Hello Yellow
  • June 27 – Going Green
  • July 11 – True Blue
  • July 18 – Incredible Indigo
  • July 25 – Very, Very Violet

This summer, children can bowl every day for FREE at several bowling centers around the Fort Worth and Dallas area ~ a fun activity for rainy days or when it’s just too hot to play outside! There are 2 different free kids bowling programs, so check them both out to find the most convenient location to you.

1.  Free Kids Bowling through AMF:  With this program, you’ll get a weekly voucher for two free games per child, May 14 through September 3 until 8pm.   Find participating locations and sign up here.

2. “Kids Bowl Free”: Select bowling centers around DFW are participating in the “Kids Bowl Free” program.  This program allows you to register your child/children to play 2 free games EVERY day, all summer long.  Times vary by location.  Go here to learn more.

Summer Family Bowling Pass Savings:  With both of these programs, adults can get in on the fun with a family pass savings deal. The family pass includes 2 games of bowling per person, every day. Main St. Arts Festival is finally here!  This juried art fest showcases more than 200 of the nation’s finest artists and is staged around the streets of downtown (mainly around Sundance Square).  It’s a family friendly event with savory food, performance artists, kids activities, and street performers.

The festival also features over 50 live concerts throughout the weekend, including hundreds of performers in just about every music genre (the lineup even includes a bagpiper)! Some of the talent that caught our eyes this year include award-winning country singer Steve Wariner, local crooner Ricki Derek & the Vegas Six (if you love Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennet, you’ll really like this set) and our personal local favorite R&B /jazz group ~ The Buster Brown Band.
