FREE Drawing From the Collection classes for kids:  Two sessions of this free program for children are offered, one for ages 5 to 8 and one for ages 9 to 12. Each session is led by an artist who takes participants through informal drawing exercises that relate to works in the Modern’s galleries. Children under the age of six must be accompanied by an adult during the program. Bring a sketchbook and pencils. Attendance is limited; early arrival is encouraged. A sign-up sheet can be found at the information desk.

FREE Drawing From the Collection class for adults:  Learn with local artists as they lead free, informal basic drawing classes in the galleries. This class is open to adults at all skill levels. Fort Worth Yard Smart Seminar

Attendees will hear from well-known experts on topics such as creating a bird-friendly habitat, growing vegetables and flowers in containers, and vegetable gardening for beginners. Participants can also bring their gardening questions and issues  to get help during the Ask the Experts session — this is your chance to get FREE professional gardening advice (and even bring a sample cutting of a plant problem if you’d like).

Presenters and panelists include Randy Weston of Weston Gardens In Bloom, and Steve Chaney and Dotty Woodson from the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service.

Here is a fun and FREE event to add to your family’s summer activity calendar: The Amon Carter Museum will be hosting Storytime, a free public program for young children and their families on Wednesdays in June and July.

Amon Carter Storytime 2015

Go wild during Amon Carter’s Storytime — all about animals! This free program connects beloved children’s books with a variety of artworks on view in the Amon Carter’s galleries.  And to make Storytime even more fun-filled, some of the dates will feature live animals from the zoo on  June 17 (small mammals), July 1 (reptiles), and July 22 (birds)!

The dates and weekly themes are:

  • June 10 — Awesome Amphibians
  • June 17 — Marvelous Mammals
  • June 24 — Sensational Sea Creatures
  • July 1 — Radical Reptiles
  • July 8 — Incredible Insects

Whether you’re a participant or a spectator, celebrate the 100th birthday of Lake Worth on Saturday at the Centennial Boat Parade! At 11:00am, Mayor Betsy Price will lead the 11-mile parade route of over 100 participating water craft including power boaters, sail boaters, standup paddleboarders, kayakers and canoers.   Lake Worth filled to capacity on Aug. 10, 1914, becoming the largest municipal park in the world. 100 years later, Lake Worth is a sparkling jewel surround by green parkland.

JFK in Fort Worth ~ A Lasting Impression

On November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy delivered the final two speeches of his life to audiences in Fort Worth. He spoke about the nation’s international leadership and its ambitions to explore outer space. He also praised Fort Worth’s role in the nation’s history.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s death, the Fort Worth Library presents JFK in Fort Worth: A Lasting Impression, a special exhibit documenting Kennedy’s visit to Fort Worth, Lee Harvey Oswald’s connection to the city and the planning and design of the JFK Tribute.  Docent led tours are offered 2 – 4 pm on Saturdays in November.

Pay tribute to the men and women who have served in the service of our country at the 2013 Veterans Day parade in Fort Worth. The parade starts at La Grave Field, winds through downtown and then ends back at the Cat’s home field. One of the best places to watch the parade is between Belknap and Fifth streets.
