Take a musical journey from the 20th century roots of Jazz to the diverse sounds of the present with Fort Worth Library’s annual Third Thursday Jazz Series. Featuring an outstanding list of nationally and locally known talent, all concerts are FREE and open to the public.

September’s Third Thursday Jazz Series Features the Paul Unger Septet ~ Thursday, September 19, 6:30PM
The 2013 Thursday Jazz series winds up with local favorite, the Paul Unger Septet.  The group will perform music selections from Charles Mingus’ groundbreaking 1959 recording Ah Um.  The septet is led by bassist Paul Unger who has performed with such artists as Kevin Eubanks, Bobby Shew, Bob Newhart, Bernadette Peters, Jay Clayton and Andrea Bocelli.

FREE Family Movie At The Amon Carter Museum ~ The Great Muppet Caper

The Amon Carter Museum of American Art is hosting a fun family movie event, Sunset Cinema: The Great Muppet Caper Thursday evening, July 25th on the museum’s lawn.  Grab a bite to eat at the Central Market and Gypsy Scoops food trucks.  Lawn chairs, blankets, and coolers are welcome (though, no alcohol, glass bottles, or pets, please). You can even come early and enjoy a tour of the museum before the film.

Celebrate the first powered flight in Fort Worth 

On a windy afternoon on Jan. 12, 1911, Roland Garros, memmber of a touring group of French and American pilots, took to the air and became the first person to perform a powered flight in Fort Worth. A crowd of nearly 17,000 people watched the event at the Fort Worth Driving Park near present-day Montgomery Plaza. To commemorate the event, the Veterans Memorial Air Park will host a First Flight Day celebration on Saturday.  Learn more about Fort Worth’s aviation heritage at this FREE event.

About the movie: Filmmakers Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson come together to bring to life Herge’s comic series based on a young reporter named Tintin. Pay tribute to the men and women who have served in the service of our country at the 2012 Veterans Day parade in Fort Worth. The parade starts at La Grave Field, winds through downtown and then ends back at the Cat’s home field. This year, the Grand marshal will be Brigadier Gen. Samuel L. Henry, 36th Infantry Division assistant commander of the Texas Army National Guard.

Georgia O’Keeffe Pattern of Leaves Amon Carter Museum

The Amon Carter museum is hosting a landmark show featuring about 100 masterworks by over sixty-three artists from the The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.  This FREE exhibit traces American art from the 19th century through the mid 20th century and features work from familiar names such as Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, and Georgia O’Keeffe. The Amon Carter is one of only three U.S. museums to host the exhibition; previous touring cities include Madrid, Tokyo and Rovereto, Italy.
