If you are a jazz fan, then you will want to check out Fort Worth’s 2010 Third Thursday Jazz Series, sponsored by the Central Library and the City of Fort Worth. This concert series features an outstanding list of nationally and locally known talent and is FREE and open to the public.  

:: Internationally known Jay Clayton will be featured Thursday.
This month’s Thursday (May 20) lineup includes vocalist Jay Clayton, a favorite of the New York and European jazz scenes.  Jay Clayton has performed at New York’s Lincoln Center and the Montmartre Jazz Festival in Paris, France.

Summer Reading Programs For Kids = FREE Books

As the end of school approaches, you may be wondering how you can fill
the summer days with fun activities for the kids.  One idea ~ incorporate a
regular reading program. Not only do you help your children learn to enjoy
reading, they can earn FREE books, too!     

Following are 3 summer programs that will reward your kids with
FREE books for their reading efforts:    

:: Borders Double Dog Dare Summer Reading Program
What: Take part in Border’s reading program and get 1 FREE Book from
    Border’s Bookstores!  Go here for more details.
How: To get the free book, read any 10 books this summer (these can
    even be from the library). Print and fill out this form, and then bring the
    completed form into any Borders, Borders Express, or Waldenbooks.
Who:  Border’s Summer reading program is for kids aged 12 and under.
When:  Now through August 26, 2010, or until supplies run out.    

:: Barnes & Noble Passport to Summer Reading
What: Earn a FREE Book from Barnes & Noble this summer! 
    Learn more here.
How: To get the free book, read any 8 books this summer (again, they
    can be from anywhere). Print and fill out the B&N passport, and then
    bring the completed form into any Barnes & Noble Bookstore.
Who:  B&N’s summer reading program is for kids through 6th grade.
When:  May 25 through September 7, 2010, or until supplies run out.    

:: Half Price Books Feed Your Brain Reading Program
What: Earn a FREE $3 Gift Card from Half Price Books every week, for up
     to 5 weeks (or $15 FREE)!  Go here for more details.
How: To get the free gift cards, read at least 15 minutes for 5 days of
    each week (any reading materials qualify). Print and fill out the reading
    log, and then bring the completed log to any Half Price Books Store, at
    the end of each week.
Who:  For kids aged 14 and under.
When:  June 1 through July 31, 2010.   

                     

:: Tips for Making the Most of  Your Summer Reading   

1. Spend time with your child helping them select books to read. 
A great place to start is Amazon’s list of best-selling children’s books
(most books on Amazon are deeply discounted or you can use this as a
starting point for your library check-out list).   

2.  Encourage your child’s love for books with fresh ideas for
motivating them to read. Find hundreds of creative tips to make reading
exciting for your child, at rif.org.

consider filling your prescription at Target. Their pharmacy is
offering a $10 Target Store Gift Card with any prescription.

5/9 newspaper, or ask for a copy of the flyer at Target’s customer service
desk through Saturday, 5/15.

FRUGAL BLISS: Get The South Beach Diet Supercharged Book for FREE!

A Book for Everyone!
Whether you have some pounds to lose or are just looking for some new tips and
yummy recipes for living a healthy lifestyle, everyone can benefit from the
South Beach Diet Supercharged book.  Written by cardiologist, Arthur
Agatston, the diet was birthed out of years of research with heart patients and
a goal of decreasing the risks of heart disease (the No. 1 killer of women!).    

I’m adding this book to my personal library. Now.

this book out from our local library. After using the recipes and meal plans for a
few weeks I’ve decided to make the South Beach Diet Supercharged book part
of our permanent book collection. Not only are the recipes delicious, it feels 
really great knowing that I’m feeding my family food that we enjoy and
also benefits our health!     

I could go on (read the reviews on Amazon if you want to learn what
others think), but suffice it to say that I love, love, LOVE, what I’m learning from
this book and the positive transformation to our family’s eating habits (not
to mention our waist lines)!

Yum!  Tonight, Baskin Robbins is ringing in ice cream season with 31 cent
scoop night!  As part of an initiative to honor and raise money for fire fighters
across the country, they will be dishing up ice cream at this super cheap price 
from 5-10PM.

::  Ft.Worth Naval Air Station ~ FREE Air Show and Air Power Expo 
     Saturday-Sunday, April 24-25, 2010       

       

Bring the family to the NAS Fort Worth JRB base for a full-day of FREE fun
including daring air aerobatic maneuvers, demonstrations, static displays
(including warbirds, helicopters and jets), family activities, live music concert,
food and more.

   Fort Worth Botanic Japanese Gardens Fall        

The Ft. Worth Botanic Garden is hosting two fabulous weekend events:       

Spring Festival in the Japanese Garden 
Feast your eyes on the spectacular spring color of the beautiful Japanese
garden (voted as one of the most beautiful places in Fort Worth) while
you and your family enjoy traditional Japanese dance, music, demonstrations,
papermaking, docent-lead tours, tea ceremonies and more. The festival is
expanding this year with even more exciting performers and a food court.    
Saturday 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Sun: 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM   

FREE Fort Worth Spring Rose Show
Enjoy hundreds of locally grown cut roses on display in the Deborah
Beggs Moncrief Garden Center at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden. You can
receive a free Earthkind rose-bush when you join the Fort Worth Rose
Society, too!

setting of Southlake Town Square.   Country music star, Derek Sholl, will play on
the main stage Saturday night.

rides for the kids and more. Grammy nominated musical act, Trout Fishing in
America, is headlining Saturday evening’s concert line-up.

Last weekend’s abundance of rain also created an unplanned abundance of
plant inventory at DFW area Lowes Garden & Home Improvement Centers. 
To help clear out the extra plants, many (if not all) area Lowes stores have
placed ALL their flowering plants (annuals, perennials, hanging baskets, etc.)
on sale for 50% OFF.  This sale ends today, April 21, 2010.
