FRUGAL REMINDER: $5 Subscription to Southern Living (Expires Saturday)

Too good of a deal, not to post a little reminder :)  …Amazon’s $5 subscription to Southern Living expires Saturday.

In case you missed the 1st post, Southern Living, is having a 1-week special through Amazon. SL normally offers this for $20-$30, but it is now $5, THIS WEEK ONLY (expires 8/29).

GREAT DEAL: Southern Living Subscription $5 (Expires Saturday!)

One of my favorite magazines, Southern Living, is having a one week only subscriber special through Amazon.com. SL normally offers their 1-year subscription for $20-$30, but it is being offered for $5, THIS WEEK ONLY (expires 8/29).

I have been a reader and subscriber to the magazine for many years and find it one of the most enjoyable and useful magazines…from the regional travel/restaurants, southern gardening, and home living tips, to their great seasonal recipes (tested and rated by their food staff /test kitchens, only their top rated recipes get into the magazine).

I’m not much of one to add to the mail-box-generated-paper-piles, but this is too good of an offer not to pass along.

>>> Click here to get the $5 Southern Living subscription (1-year)

If you are not familiar with the magazine, you can get a taste of what is inside at their website (www.southernliving.com).

Frugal Tip (for my friends that like to cook):

Instead of stocking up on cookbooks in your kitchen (or saving all those cutout recipes from the magazines), consider using Southern Living’s free website.  They have archived all the recipes from their monthly mags, along with recipes from Cooking Light, Health, and other magazines owned by the publishing house.

This is a great site to visit when you just don’t know what to cook, are looking for a seasonal recipe, or just want to try something new with a particular ingredient you have on hand.  Click here to search by recipe name or click here to search by ingredient.

Stop and Smell the Roses with $1 Admission to The Dallas Arboretum!!

I normally write about Fort Worth area happenings when making “frugal fun” recommendations, but this time I must venture to Dallas to one of my favorite spots…the Dallas Arboretum, as they are running a promotion that is too good not to pass-along to my FW friends…

The Dallas Arboretum is offering $1 admission to all guests through August ~ it is normally $9.50 for Adults /$6 for Children
…quite a savings!

At the Arboretum you will find something for everyone.  Against the background of easy-to-navigate gardens and gorgeous foliage design for the adults (tons of photo ops!), there are lots of fun things for the kids, too.

Kids will have fun exploring the tee-pee, cabins and play structures in Texas Town and the Pioneer Village — both excellent places for parents to kick back as the kids explore frontier life.  Everyone will enjoy the Storybook Playhouses that are sprinkled throughout as well —there is even a fun pirate’s ship, a Dr. Seuss inspired play area, and a Hansel and Gretel playhouse!  Click here for the list of playhouses you will find.

What:  Through the month of August, admission is $1 (kids under 3 are free!).  Parking is $5.  For more info about the Dallas Arboretum, click here.

Where:  8525 Garland Road, Dallas  (For a map and directions, click here).

When:  Open Daily, 9am-5pm

Helpful Tidbits:  Pack a Picnic and some cool drinks OR plan to eat at one of the Arboretum’s restaurants/snack cafés.

P.S.  Take a look at the pictures from this mom’s visit to the Arboretum with her kids (click here), to get a quick glimpse of what is in store for your visit.

Enjoy!  :)

SAVE ON BACK-TO-SCHOOL AND OFFICE SUPPLIES… $5 OFF COUPON AT STAPLES

When I was a kid, one of the highlights of getting ready to go back to school was shopping for brand new school supplies.  I loved having a new spiral of crisp notebook paper and a fresh box of sharp, unused crayons (though, I never quite understood Crayola’s need to include green-yellow AND yellow-green).  Part of the excitement of starting a new school year was the changing list of needed supplies…I remember feeling like I hit the “big time” in my first year of middle school when “map pencils” made the list!  Good times.  :)

Fast forward to this weekend…

Staples Office Supply has a bonus for your back-to-school and office supply shopping needs.

They are offering $5 OFF any purchase of $20 or more.

Click here to get the coupon (but hurry…the coupon expires tomorrow, 7/18/09!)

A Couple of Fun Things to Do on Saturday Morning (Go EARLY Before the Temperature Soars!)

A few weeks ago, I wrote about Certified Farmers Markets around Texas (and the great beyond), as well as highlighted the Cowtown Farmers Market in our own backyard.

 http://kellerfarmersmarket.com/About_Us.html

Since this is in my neck-of-the-woods, I am REALLY looking forward to having a farmer’s market close by that I can call “my own.”  Here is the scoop for Keller’s new Farmer’s Market…

Where: 251 Town Center Lane (off 1709 and Rufe Snow), around the beautiful Keller Town Center fountain (in front of Keller Town Hall).  Click here for directions.

~ Grand Opening Highlights ~

  •  Nationally recognized Chef, Peter D’Andrea, will make his inaugural visit to the Market to demonstrate his original recipes for seasonal produce, healthy cooking and entertaining. Peter will conduct several demonstrations throughout the day. Peter has been the Executive Chef for Gaylord Hotels, Opryland, Marriott and Ritz Carlton.
