There are several Christmas Tree Lighting festivals and events happening around town this weekend — pick one (or two!), heat up a thermos of hot chocolate, bundle up, and head out to create a fun memory for your family!

Keller Town Center Holly Days: Christmas at Keller Town Center
What:
Come join the holiday spirit at Keller Town Center! Enjoy The Very Merry Light Parade, the lighting of the Christmas tree, Santa’s arrival, stage entertainment, a two-lane snow hill, arts and crafts, bounce houses, concessions and activities at the Jingle Bell Zone. Learn more here.

City of Roanoke Christmas Tree Lighting Event
What:
 Be a part of Roanoke’s annual Christmas parade, tree lighting, and holiday celebration including a fun night of Bounce houses, carriage rides, children’s crafts, children’s train, live musical performances, photos with Santa (remember to bring your camera!), refreshments and holiday fun at the Recreation Center, strolling carolers, and more. Learn more here.

Where: Roanoke, on Oak Street. Important parade route information for 2015: This year the Christmas parade will make its way down through the new part of South Oak Street! This new route will provide everyone with more space for parking and viewing.

North Richland Hills Tree Lighting Celebration at NRH2O
What:
Fireworks, lighting of the tree, arrival by Santa, mini-train rides, live music performances, photos with Santa,  carousel rides, marshmallow roast, and more! Learn more here.

Fort Worth Stockyards Christmas Parade and Celebration
What:
Fort Worth Stockyards Christmas Celebration has an afternoon of fun planned including lighting of the Christmas tree, a holiday parade, Cowboy Santa, pony rides, caroling, and more! Learn more here.

:: FREE Annual Littlest Wiseman Christmas Pageant
December 5-13, 2015

The Fort Worth Academy of Fine Arts and Dorothy Shaw Bell Choir will perform The Littlest Wiseman, a pageant of the Nativity presented December 5 to 13. This Christmas gift to the Fort Worth community has been in production for over 50 years and is an annual tradition for many families. Tickets for all performances are FREE and can be reserved ahead of time (get tickets here) or received at the door (we recommended that you make reservations in advance).

Now Through December 23

Visit Santa at Sundance Square Plaza. The jolly old elf will be waiting to hear Christmas wishes at his home near the towering 59-foot Sundance Square Christmas tree, beautifully adorned with thousands of lights. Fort Worth Sister Cities International invites you to take your photo with Santa and is offering guests a photo with Santa for a $10 donation (cash only please) which will go towards youth programs. You are also welcome to bring your personal camera to take photos if you prefer.

Get a taste of farm life just steps away from the heart of the city at historic Nash Farm in Grapevine and enjoy their FREE Christmas event!  Visitors will be led by docents through the farmhouse and the farm to experience how Grapevine’s earliest settlers celebrated Christmas in Texas during the latter part of the 19th Century. Visitors can enjoy hot cider and cookies and a tour of the farm as well.

With the beautiful backdrop of the Victorian-style buildings dressed up with ribbons, bows and wreaths and set aglow with twinkling lights that children of all ages can enjoy.  Tractor-drawn wagon rides will depart behind the Gazebo during select hours.  Rides are $1 per person, per ride, proceeds benefit the historic preservation of Nash Farm.

If you’re looking for a different sort of Christmas parade this year, make your way to the Twinkle Light Boat Parade, one of the most unique Christmas parades you will ever see! You will find water crafts decorated in all of the finest sparkling lights to celebrate the season. This floating festival begins at Twin Coves Marina and picks up entries at each marina including Scott’s Landing and Silver Lake.

All the artists are local to DFW, but originally come from across the nation and the world.

This Saturday, bring your child to Home Depot’s Kids Workshop to help them learn a new woodworking skill and build their very own Holiday Stacking Blocks Project to take home. Workshops teach children do-it-yourself skills, tool safety and instill a sense of pride and accomplishment.  All kids get to keep their craft, receive a FREE certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorative pin.  All workshops are free, but you should probably show up early to insure you have a kit for your little ones.

The Modern Art Museum ~ Fort Worth Kids Drawing Program

FREE Drawing From the Collection classes for kids:  Two sessions of this free program for children are offered, one for ages 5 to 8 and one for ages 9 to 12. Each session is led by an artist who takes participants through informal drawing exercises that relate to works in the Modern’s galleries. Children under the age of six must be accompanied by an adult during the program. Bring a sketchbook and pencils. Attendance is limited; early arrival is encouraged. A sign-up sheet can be found at the information desk.

FREE Drawing From the Collection class for adults:  Learn with local artists as they lead free, informal basic drawing classes in the galleries. This class is open to adults at all skill levels. It’s time for the annual Sundance Square Christmas Tree Lighting! Come join the fun in Sundance Square Plaza to celebrate the start of the holiday season with the lighting of the beautiful 59′-foot tall Christmas tree. Sing-a-long to holiday carols and enjoy a hot chocolate before a visit with Saint Nick, himself. After the lighting, kids can get their picture taken with Santa too!

The free-admission offer applies to all U.S. veterans, retired and active military personnel and one guest. Up to six additional tickets may be purchased at Knott’s Ticket Booths for a discount through December 20. Pay tribute to the men and women who have served in the service of our country at the 2015 Veterans Day parade in Fort Worth. Parade entries will stage north of the Tarrant County Courthouse on Wednesday, November 11 (North Main Street) and step off at 10:30 a.m. The parade will proceed south on Main Street to Sundance Square for an 11 a.m. opening ceremony.  Learn more here.

Woohoo — it is almost time for the annual State Fair of Texas! If you want to take your family at the lowest cost possible, be sure and check out our savings guide below.  We share the inside scoop on how to save a bundle on admission, rides, food and more!

Texas State Fair Events Begin This Friday, September 25
(Runs September 25 to October 18, 2015)

This year’s line up of events and talent is as extensive as ever. 24 free concerts (with admission) include: Craig Wayne Boyd – finalist of NBC’s “The Voice”, The Beach Boys, Lecrae, Mercy Me, and more great bands. General admission fair tickets are normally $18/person.  Plan ahead, and you can enjoy your day at a deep discount (or even attend for FREE) with one of the many ways to save on admission tickets, rides, and food. Please note, discounts may not be combined with any offers.

2015 State Fair Discounts

1. September 25, Opening Day $9 Admission with a Food Donation to the North Texas Food Bank Bring a full 20 oz. bottle of Dasani water (or any Coca-Cola product) for donation to the North Texas Food Bank containers at Fair admission gates and get in for HALF PRICE on opening day (September 25, 2015). One donation per person. Discount may not be combined with any offers. 

2.  Tuesdays, Dr Pepper Day: $5 Admission & 6 Coupon Rides ~ On Tuesdays, bring an empty Dr Pepper can to the admission gate and enter for $5. Most rides (excluding the Thrillway and the Texas Star) are discounted to 6 coupons as well. One can per person.

3.  Wednesdays, North Texas Food Bank Food Drive: 4 Cans for $4 Admission ~ Bring 4 cans of food for donation to the N. Texas Food Bank any Wednesday of the Fair and receive a coupon for a $4 admission ticket. Enjoy the Fair for just $4 and help stock the North Texas Food Bank. One (4 can) donation per person.

4.  Thursdays, Coke Day: $6 AdmissionBring an empty 20 oz. bottle of a Coca-Cola product and receive a coupon for a $6 admission ticket to the State Fair.  One bottle per person.

5.  Thursdays, Seniors Day: FREE Admission ~ Senior Citizens 60 years and older get into the State Fair FREE each Thursday.

6. Thursdays, NEW “Thrifty Thursdays” Discounted Food ~ Participating food vendors are offering special pricing on signature menu items with Thrifty Thursdays! Featured items include State Fair classics like cotton candy and funnel cakes, plus many more. Special pricing available each Thursday of the 2015 Fair. 7.  Fridays, $5 OFF with KISS-FM coupon ~ Download and print a coupon from the KISS-FM  website  (here) to get $13 admission with the coupon.  Discount is off of general admission only, when purchased at a State Fair of Texas admission gate with coupon

8. Fridays, 50% OFF Tickets with Fort Worth Star Telegram Press Pass Savings ~ Present the special State Fair of Texas coupon (found in the Star-Telegram on 9/18, 9/20, 9/25, 10/02, 10/09, 10/16) and your valid Press Pass at any State Fair of Texas ticket booth to receive a 50% discount off the regular general admission price of $18. Valid for up to two discounted admissions per cardholder. Offer good any Friday during the 2015 State Fair of Texas and cannot be combined with any other discount or promotion.

9. Friday, October 2, Fort Worth Star Telegram Gold Press Pass Savings: 2 FREE ADMISSION TicketsPresent the special State Fair of Texas coupon (found in the Star-Telegram on 9/18, 9/20, 9/25, 10/02, 10/09, 10/16) and your valid GOLD Press Pass at any State Fair of Texas ticket booth to receive up to two (2) FREE general admission tickets. Offer good on Friday, October 2 only during the 2015 State Fair of Texas and cannot be combined with any other discount or promotion. Offer expires October 2, 2015.

10. Any Day After 5pm, Dr Pepper Day: $9 Admission ~ Bring an empty Dr Pepper can 5 p.m. each day to get half price admission ($9). One can per person.

11. Any Day $2 Off, Dart GoPass ~ Buy discounted tickets to the State Fair right from your DART GoPass app. Adult tickets are just $16 and child/senior tickets are $12.  You can also buy a DART pass to the Fair. Both your DART pass and your Fair tickets will be right there on your phone and scanned at the gates.

12. Any Day, $3 Off with McDonald’s coupon ~ McDonald’s offers $3 off General Admission with one of their State Fair coupons (available on tray liner or bag stuffer) any day of the Fair.  A $6 child ticket (with purchase of general admission) coupon is also distributed by McDonald’s.

13.  Any Day,  Ticket Discounts at Kroger ~ Kroger is the official site for advanced discount ticket purchases. We do recommend calling the Kroger service desk before stopping by to purchase tickets, as not all locations offer these tickets:

  • Advance General Admission$16.50  Valid for any one-day admission.
  • Advance Season Pass: $34.95. This is only sold at Kroger, and not available at the State Fair admission gates.  This is a great deal if you are going to make multiple visits during the fair.  This season pass includes: unlimited visits for 2015 and a one-day companion ticket (good Monday-Friday).

14. Any Day, $10 Off a Season Pass with Sonic Promo Code ~ Stop by Sonic  for complete details on how to SAVE $10 off a Season Pass. Valid online through 10/11/2015.

FREE Admission to All National Parks — Saturday

The National Parks Service is offering FREE entrance to all parks on National Public Lands Day, Saturday, September 26th. As part of the celebration, you can enjoy over 400 National Parks for FREE. Do note that not all national parks charge fees, but those that do will waive their costs these days (for example, $25 a car at Big Bend or $20 a car at Rocky Mountain National Park).
