Ladies Designer Brand Warehouse Sale November 14 15 16 2013

A few days ago, I popped over to Dallas to get a preview of the sale and take a few pictures for our readers. Do note: There is a large dressing room provided for trying on all your fun finds, but typical of women’s fashion warehouse sales, it is ladies only and not private. Since this is a women only event, husbands, guy-friends and kiddos under 12, please stay comfortable at home.

There are oodles of special Veterans Day FREE dining and other give-away events in the coming days to honor of our veterans and active military service members. Note that many of these discounts extend beyond Veterans Day, November 11th and some are even offered year round. Most do require proof of military service (we’ve tried to provide details where we have them, but you might want to call before you go). Here’s the scoop: 

FREE Meals & Other Discounts For
Veterans and Active Military

Eat FREE at Applebee’s ~ November 11
Military veterans and active-duty service members will be able to eat for free at any Applebee’s across the U.S. on Veterans Day, November 11. There will be seven entrée choices on the FREE menu, and guests will be asked to show proof of military service. A complete listing of all Applebee’s locations is available at applebees.com.

FREE Entree at BJ’s Restaurant ~ November 11 & 12
Veterans and those on active military duty, visit your local BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse  on November 11 & 12 to get a FREE lunch entree or a one-topping mini or individual pizza for dinner.

FREE Burger at Champps Americana ~ November 11
Champps is celebrating our Veterans and Active Military by providing a FREE Champps Cheeseburger and Fries meal on November 11th. Proof of military service is required and is for dine-in only at participating  locations. Go here to learn more.

FREE Pizza at California Pizza Kitchen ~ November 11
Veterans and active military will receive a  free pizza of your choice on November 11th.  Learn more here.

FREE Meal at Chili’s ~ November 11
Chilis is offering a FREE meal from a special menu to all veterans and active duty personnel on Veterans Day. This offer is available on November 11 at  participating Chili’s in the U.S. only. Veterans and active duty military simply  show proof of military service.  Beverages and gratuity are not included.

FREE Pancakes at Denny’s ~ November 11
Denny’s is giving away a FREE all you can eat pancake breakfast to all active, retirees, and veterans with a valid military ID or proof of military service, from 6am – 2pm on Monday, November 11.  Go here to learn more.

FREE Bagel at Einstein Bros ~ November 11
Einstein Bros wants to thank  American troops this Veterans Day by offering a FREE Bagel and Shmear, or any other topping, to all active, inactive and retired military personnel on Monday, November 11.  Learn more here.

Eat FREE at Golden Corral ~ November 11
Golden Corral’s annual Military Appreciation dinner will be held on Monday, November 11th, from 4 to 9 pm. The FREE dinner meal is a special “thank you tribute” to any person who has ever served in the United States Military. If you are a veteran, retired, currently serving, in the National Guard or Reserves, you are invited to join Golden Corral’s Military Appreciation dinner. For more information go here .

FREE Doughnut & Coffee at Krispy Kreme ~ November 11
Krispy Kreme will give a free doughnut and coffee to veterans and active military in uniform (or with ID) on November 11.

FREE Meal at Olive Garden ~ November 11
Veterans and active military will receive a FREE meal on  November 11th. Choose from a select list of entrees here.  Family dining with them will also receive 10% Off their meal. Show a military ID or other proof of service to qualify.

FREE meal at On the Border ~ November 11
On the Border is giving veterans and active military who dine in the restaurant November 11 a free meal from its “create your own combo” menu.

FREE Appetizer & Drink at Outback Steakhouse ~ November 11
Outback Steakhouse will honor our heroes with a free Bloomin’ Onion appetizer and a beverage on November 11 in celebration of Veterans Day. And, because Veterans Day is not long enough to fully express the nation’s gratitude, Outback is honoring all service members with 10% off their meals Nov. 12 through Dec. 31. FREE Pizza or Entrée at Uno’s Pizzeria ~ November 11

FREE Lunch at Texas Roadhouse ~ November 11
Texas Roadhouse locations across the country will provide a free lunch and beverage from a special menu to honor the men and women of our armed  forces. FREE Lunch at T.G.I. Friday’s ~ November 11
Stop in from 11am to 2pm at TGI Friday’s on Monday, November 11th for a FREE Veterans Day lunch.Valid for all US Military personnel and veterans. Must wear uniform (if permitted by your service) or present military ID or other proof of service.  More details on TGIFridays.com.

FREE Store Offers & Other Special Discounts
For Veterans and Active Military

10% Off at Home Depot and Lowes ~ Year Round!
Use your military ID at any Home Depot or Lowes and receive a 10% discount on your purchases. The 10% military discount is available to: Active-duty military members, National Guard and Reserve members, retirees, honorably discharged veterans and immediate family members of all those groups. Customers requesting a discount must be able to show a valid military ID card or other proof of military service.

FREE Wedding Gown for Military Brides!
I LOVE this freebie ~ so fantastic on so many levels!! Select stores across the U.S. are offering military brides FREE wedding gowns through the non-profit group, Brides Across America. The gowns are samples and overstocks and worth $500 to $3000.   There are not any stores in DFW participating (I hope that changes in the future), but there are a couple of stores taking part in the Houston area and one in San Antonio.  Gowns are on a first come, first serve basis and most stores have the give-away event November 11.  Find all participating locations in the U.S. here.

SeaWorld Parks FREE Tickets ~ through December 31, 2013
Sea World is providing complimentary admission for active duty military, active members of a reserve or National Guard unit, and up to three direct dependents. Valid for ONE FREE single-day admission per person, per year, to SeaWorld in San Antonio and their sister adventure parks in other parts of the country.  They are also offering additional 50% off tickets through Veterans Day. FREE Entrance Day at U.S. National Parks ~ November 9-11
To honor America’s service men and women, the U.S. National Parks will not charge entrance fees Veterans Day Weekend. Visitors to public recreation lands managed by the National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management and Bureau of Reclamation are invited to take a day to honor and reflect on what our service men and women have done to maintain our freedom and keep peace around the world. Don’t you love this weather?  It’s a welcome reminder that the beginning of fall is here (I don’t know about you, but I am SO ready!). It is the perfect time to make a fun family memory by carving a jack-o-lantern to decorate your home. Here are some free templates to get your creative wheels rolling.

Pick up a couple of inexpensive pumpkins and try you hand at a fun design with one of  these FREE pumpkin stencils!  

  • The Texas Rangers fan club  has 4 FREE Texas Rangers and Texas themed FREE printable jack-o-lantern templates here.  Show your support for our favorite baseball team!
  • Southern Living inspires with 31 free pumpkin carving ideas – from elegant to jolly–to ready your house for the fall.
  • Better Homes and Gardens provides over 100  creative ideas and templates for decorating pumpkins here.  They even offer free customized stencils when you answer a short quiz based on your carving ability level, decorating desires, and project involvement needs.
  • Hesheys.com offers a wide variety of 30 different patterns from easy to advanced, with printable carving instructions.
  • DisneyFamily.com has over 40 templates including many Disney character patterns ~ Mickey Mouse, Jake and the Never Land Pirates, Toy Story, and Doc McStuffins.
  • Nick Jr. offers 25 favorite Nick Jr. TV show character patterns like Dora the Explorer, Paw Patrol, and many others.
  • Kraft.com has 6 different pumpkin face patterns as well as an easy-to-follow guide for carving pumpkins, here.
  • PumpkinLady.com provides a wide selection of clever design templates, most for less than $1.50. Click around the site for some great ideas.  You’ll also find 12 designs for FREE  here.  Follow the pumpkin lady’s Facebook or Twitter pages for other free designs and discounts, too.

I recommend a couple of great tools for making your pumpkin carving project easier:

  • For the more serious pumpkin carving project, I recommend the Messermeister Pumpkin Carving Kit which includes a chef quality Pumpkin/Melon knife, scoop and carving tools in a storage case.  The special blades are designed to carve intricate designs beautifully (not for the kiddos, though)!   They’ll give a great grip when cutting and carving pumpkins and thick melons, too.
  • If you want one really good tool, I recommend getting a special Pumpkin/Melon Carving knife. We really like the Warren Pro Pumpkin Carving knife. It is well made with a walnut handle and comes with several sturdy replacement blades that have a fine saw like cutting action ~ they will not bend or break as with the cheaper versions.  Again, this is not safe for kids.

2013 State Fair of Texas Discount Tickets Savings Guide ~ September 27 to October 20

It is finally beginning to feel like autumn in Texas and that means it is time for the annual Texas State Fair! If you are seeking to take your family at the lowest cost possible, be sure and check out our savings guide below.  We can help you save a bundle and if you plan it right, you can even attend for FREE!

Texas State Fair Events Begin Today, September 27
(Runs September 27-October 20, 2013)
This year’s line up of events is as extensive as ever.  Free Concerts (with admission) include: Casting Crowns, Asleep at the Wheel, Blondie, Molly Ringwald,  and more great bands. There is so much to see and do.  Check out the line up of concerts here,  the list of celebrity chef demonstrations here, and the full schedule of events here. 

Lots of Ways to Save on Tickets
General admission fair tickets are normally $17/person.  Plan ahead, and you can enjoy your day at a deep discount (or even attend for FREE) with one of the many ways to save on your tickets. Following is a roundup of discount options:

1. Kroger Grocery Store is the official site for advanced discount ticket purchases. We do recommend calling the Kroger service desk before stopping by to purchase tickets, as not all locations offer these tickets:

  • Advance General Admission: $16  (compared to $17 at gates).  Valid for any one-day admission.
  • Advance Season Pass: $34.95 (Only sold at Kroger, and not sold at State Fair admission gates).  This is a great deal if you are going to make multiple visits during the fair.  This season pass includes: Unlimited visits for 2013, a one-day companion ticket (good Monday-Friday) and one Cinemark movie ticket.

2. September 27, Opening Day $6 Admission with a Food Donation to the North Texas Food Bank ~ Bring a full 20 oz. bottle of Dasani water (or any Coca-Cola product) for donation to the North Texas Food Bank containers at Fair admission gates to get in for $6 per person, per donation.

3.  October 3, Dickies Day FREE Admission ~ Anyone wearing a Dickies logo clothing item will receive a free voucher for admission to the Fair on same day.

4. Tuesdays, Dr Pepper Day: $5 Admission & 6 Coupon Rides~ On Tuesdays, bring an empty Dr Pepper can to the admission gate and enter for $5. Most rides (excluding the Thrillway and the Texas Star) are 6 coupons as well.

5.  Wednesdays, Kroger Food Drive Day: 3 Cans for $3 Admission ~ When you bring 3 cans of food (per person) for area food banks, get admission for $3.

6.  Thursdays, Coke Day: $6 Admission ~ Bring an empty 20 oz. bottle of a Coca-Cola product and enter the Fair for $6 admission.

7.  Thursdays, Seniors Day: FREE Admission ~ Senior Citizens 60 years and older get into the State Fair FREE each Thursday.

8.  Thursdays, Cinemark: FREE Admission ~ Present a Cinemark Movie Theater ticket stub and receive a free admission (one person per ticket stub) on any Thursday.

9.  Fridays, $5 OFF with KISS-FM coupon ~ Download and print a coupon from the KISS-FM  website  (here) to get $12 admission with the coupon.  Discount is off of general admission only, when purchased at a State Fair of Texas admission gate with coupon

10. Fridays, Fort Worth Star Telegram Press Pass Savings: Buy One Get One FREE ~ With your valid Press Pass card and State Fair of Texas coupon printed in the Star-Telegram (Friday’s DFW.com section) you receive a second ticket free when you purchase a general admission ticket at any State Fair of Texas ticket booth (at regular price of $17.00). Offer expires October 18, 2013.

11. Fridays, Fort Worth Star Telegram Gold Press Pass Savings: 2 FREE General Admission Tickets for October 4th ~ Present your valid Gold Press Pass card and State Fair of Texas coupon printed in the Star-Telegram (Friday’s DFW.com section) and you receive two free general admission tickets to the State Fair of Texas. Offer valid only on Friday, October 4 and offer cannot be combined with any other discount or promotion.

12. After 5pm any day, Dr Pepper Day: $8 Admission ~ After 5pm, admission is $8  when you bring an empty Dr Pepper can to any State Fair admission gate.

13. Any Day $3 Off, McDonald’s ~ McDonald’s offers $3 off General Admission any day of the Fair, with one of their State Fair coupons (available on the tray liner or as a bag stuffer).  A half price child with purchase of general admission coupon is also distributed by McDonald’s.

Offers may not be combined together.

On a personal note: This Classic Cafe offer does not show up on Groupon very often (perhaps once or twice a year).  We have personally purchased this deal every time we see it, and it almost always sells out.  Needless to say, we are so happy to see this Groupon roll back around! 

The food at Classic Cafe is melt-in-your-mouth incredible and service is always great.  There is a nice range of choices on the menu and most of their ingredients are locally sourced. I particularly like knowing that their beef is hormone- and antibiotic-free and all grain-fed.  You really can taste the difference.

In a nutshell, getting a meal at Classic Cafe at half price is a steal. Don’t miss this one…

This deal really caught our attention…

One of our favorite daily discount home accessories sites, One Kings Lane, is applying an extra 20 to 30% OFF your total purchase, through September 17 ~ for current members’ purchases.  I am not sure how they are choosing who gets which discount, but there is not a promo code this time.  You do have to log-in to your current One Kings Lane account to get the discount.

Not a member?  Get a $15 OFF credit when you sign up to become a One Kings Lane member (membership is FREE).  You can use this $15 credit towards any One Kings Lane order of $30 or more (woo-hoo)!  It looks like you have 30 days to use the credit before it expires, but other than that, there are no other strings attached. Please note that the $15 credit is only offered for new account sign-ups and that it is FREE to join.  Also, new accounts do not qualify for the additional 20-30% off discount.

^This fun flower pillow ~ $33 after 30% OFF discount (reg. $115).  I started thinking about how to make this to save a bit more, but after considering the effort to cut out and sew all those little pieces, I could not justify the time & materials (and potentially losing my mind ~ ha!) vs. this discounted cost. (I found this in their “Pillows to Inspire” boutique).

^Set of 3 Wire Organization baskets ~ $33 after 30% OFF discount (reg. $115).  These are a bargain at an average $11 a piece.  The smallest looks like the perfect size for corralling magazines and mail.  I love the rustic look, and removing the liner would give these a modern industrial look.  (Found in their “Get the Lodge Look ~ Alpine Accents” Boutique).

^Chevron Travel Accessories ~ Starting at $9 after Additional 30% OFF discount.  That big pop of bright graphic chevron is found on yoga bags, personalized iPad and iPhone cases, totes, and more. (We found this in their “Chevron Travel Accessories ~ Zig Zag” Boutique).
