Military veterans and active-duty service members will be able to eat for free at any Applebee’s across the U.S. on Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009. There will be six entrees from the menu to choose from. Guests will be asked to show one or more of the following as proof of service: a U.S. Uniform Services Identification Card, U.S. Uniform Services Retired Identification Card, Current Leave and Earnings Statement, or Veterans Organization Card. 10% Off at Home Depot and Lowes
Use your military ID at any Home Depot or Lowes now thru Wednesday the 11th (Veterans Day), and receive a 10% discount (up to $200 in-store only) on single receipt purchases. The 10% military discount is available to: Active-duty military members, National Guard and Reserve members, retirees, honorably discharged veterans and immediate family members of all those groups. Customers requesting a discount must be able to show a valid military ID card or other proof of military service (a DD Form 214 or VFW membership may qualify). Learn more.

Up to 50% OFF at Cabela’s Outdoor
Cabela’s Outdoor store is offering their employee discount to all veterans, active duty military and reserves, law enforcement, fire and EMS personnel on Nov. 11 and 12.  At their “Hometown Heroes” event, eligible shoppers will need to check in at the store info desk to receive a coupon for the discount.  The discount varies from 5% to 50%, depending on item, and excludes guns, boats, trailers and safes. SeaWorld Parks FREE Admission
Sea World is providing complimentary admission for active duty military representing all five service branches, active members of a reserve or National Guard unit, and/or up to three direct dependants. Valid for ONE FREE single-day admission per person, per year, to SeaWorld or the following Anheuser-Busch Adventure Parks:

Eat FREE at Golden Corral
Golden Corral’s 9th annual Military Appreciation dinner will be held on Monday, November 16, 2009, from 5 to 9 pm in all Golden Corral restaurants nationwide. The FREE dinner meal is a special “thank you tribute” to any person who has ever served in the United States Military. If you are a veteran, retired, currently serving, in the National Guard or Reserves, you are invited to join Golden Corral’s Military Appreciation dinner.

FREE Walking Cane at Sam’s Club
Over 25,000 Hugo canes will be given away free of charge to United States military veterans in need of mobility assistance. Sam’s Club membership is not required, but supplies are limited so you may want to call your local store before heading there.   Proof of military service may be required. Each Sam’s Club location will have approximately 40 canes. Details here.

Fee FREE Day at National Parks
To honor America’s service men and women, National Parks will not charge entrance fees on Wednesday, November 11, 2009. Visitors to public recreation lands managed by the National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management and Bureau of Reclamation are invited to take a day to honor and reflect on what our service men and women have done to maintain our freedom and keep peace around the world. Knott’s Berry Farm FREE Admission
Knott’s Berry Farm pays tribute to past and present U.S. armed forces personnel during Veteran’s Month with FREE park admission for them and a guest November 1-26. Up to six additional tickets can be purchased for only $15 each. Military ID or DD214 presented with a photo ID required for discount. Learn more.

Colonial Williamsburg FREE Admission
Colonial Williamsburg honors America’s Veterans with a procession down Duke of Gloucester Street, 4:30 p.m., beginning at the Capitol. The parade culminates in a public ceremony, with militia and cannon crew firing volleys in recognition of those who serve. Hear Colonial Williamsburg’s Fifes and Drums, and speakers from past and present. Active duty military, guard and reservists, retirees, veterans and their dependents enjoy free admission passes through Wednesday, Nov. 11. Learn more.

I am so very thankful for every service member in our military who has served our great nation. AutoZone has started a nifty Loan-A-Tool Program. 

Their new program provides a FREE loan on a wide selection of seldom-used, expensive-to-own specialty tools for all sorts of  DIY car repair work:  tools for  steering and suspension work, air conditioning jobs, engine repair, and more.

They’ve made it easy. Just leave a deposit at the store when you pick up the tool, and when you’re through, just bring it back to get a refund on your deposit.

Abraham Lincoln, 200th Birthday Travelling Exhibit

This week, the FW Public Library Foundation is premiering “Abraham Lincoln: A Man of His Time, a Man for All Times,” a national traveling exhibit that examines Abraham Lincoln’s life, accomplishments, and legacy. The Downtown, Central Library is the ONLY STOP in Texas for the collection. 

Guests who visit this exhibit will be among the first to view the Abraham Lincoln Collection from the Dow Foundation as well as The Pate Lincoln Collection.

Special Note:   Many of this weekend’s “Frugal & Fun” events branch off of Fort Worth’s annual “Fall Gallery Night.”  The next couple of days are PACKED with great selections (most free) at a wide range of favorite Fort Worth venues.

A few of this weekend’s highlights:

  • Jazz by the Boulevard ~ Live Jazz all weekend. Blind Boys of Alabama, George Clinton, and Chris Botti headling.
  • Premier of the Abraham Lincoln Collection & traveling exhibit ~ Opens to the tunes of an 18-member brass band playing era music on period musical instruments.
  • Gallery Night ~ Almost 50 participating locations (galleries, museums, restaurants, etc.) this year! 
  • ZestFest Food Fest~ Celebrating all things Chile Pepper including food tastings, chef demos and more hot stuff. Aayyy-eeee!
  • Art in the Garden ~ Art + The FW Botanic Garden = Beautiful!
  • Preservation is the Art of the City ~ A fun Gallery Night event supporting historic preservation in Fort Worth.
  • Diez y Seis Celebration!  Live Conjunto music, folkórico dancing, food and more.

Free Weekend Entertainment Option #1

Fort Worth’s Fall Gallery Night

 

Ft. Worth’s Gallery Night is an “Open House” FREE event, across almost 50 venues, all celebrating the visual arts and the community’s cultural richness in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.  Participating art venues include all types, from the legendary Fort Worth galleries of the west side to the chic showrooms of the trendy, up and coming south side. 

Take a stroll through participating galleries, museums, retail businesses, and area restaurants, and mingle with the many artists featured during this community event.  Many locations are hosting live music and light h’ors d’oeuvres. Hosted by the Fort Worth Art Dealer’s Association (FWADA).

When: Saturday, September 12, 2009, 2 p.m. – 9 p.m.

Art in the Garden, Fort Worth Botanic Garden Art Show and Sale

Botanic Gardens

Enjoy the beauty of the FW Botanic Gardens while taking in works from regional artists at Art in the Garden. This Annual Art Show and Sale is held in conjunction with Fall Gallery Night, 2009.  Art will be displayed in the Deborah Beggs Moncrief Garden Center close to the main entrance to the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens.

When: September 11- 13, 2009

 Jazz By The Boulevard

With two stages of continuous jazz music serving up national headliners such as Chris Botti, The Blind Boys of Alabama and George Clinton,  this year’s lineup is sure to please even the most discriminating jazz fan. Also featuring a Cooking Carnivalè pavilion with chef-taught seminars and samplings by top area chefs. A juried art show and activities for kids complete the event!

Combine this extravaganza with the Jazz festival (both at Will Rogers this weekend) and take in more of Fort Worth!  ZestFest 2009 is the ultimate event for bold and flavorful food enthusiasts. Hosted by Chile Pepper Magazine, ZestFest will be packed with cooking demos by celebrity chefs, live music, interactive contests and thousands of bold food samples.  Bring on the heat!

The FW Public Library Foundation brings a new perspective to Gallery Night by making it the grand opening of “Abraham Lincoln: A Man of His Time, a Man for All Times,” a national traveling exhibit that examines Abraham Lincoln’s life, accomplishments, and legacy. The Downtown, Central Library is the ONLY STOP in Texas for the exciting collection. 

Guests during Gallery Night will be the first to view the Abraham Lincoln Collection from the Dow Foundation as well as The Pate Lincoln Collection. Gallery night will also feature the Frontier Brigade Band, an 18-member band that celebrates the Mid-Nineteenth Century American Brass Band Movement by utilizing period musical instruments and sporting authentic period dress.  Refreshments will be served throughout the evening.
