Frugal Travel Alert: Last-Minute Thanksgiving Day Sale on Southwest & Other Airline Carriers

Just in time for that last-minute trip home
Southwest Airlines has announced another Thanksgiving sale with dates encompassing the holiday period (travel is valid Tuesday, November 24, through Wednesday, December 2).

Click here to get the scoop on Southwest’s Sale.

Southwest’s sale fares may not seem like  “bargain basement” pricing at first glance, but in actuality they are reasonably priced for last minute travel during this high-demand travel period.

Several carriers, including AirTran, Delta, Northwest, and US Airways, are also joining in and competing with their great deals as well—in one case $196 lower—on more than half of the routes we compared.

A few more tips for getting the best price on your air travel:

  •  If your dates are flexible, keep in mind the cheapest travel dates (learn more here).
  • When you’re browsing for a specific itinerary, make certain to pay attention to the advance-booking period. In many cases, the airline’s restrictions require you book 14 or more days in advance, thereby indirectly blacking-out the Thanksgiving travel period.
  • Compare prices among reliable travel consolidators like Travelocity, Orbitz, or Priceline.
  • Always compare fares at the Airlines’ direct sites.  You can sometimes get better schedules & deals by going direct to the airlines.

Enjoy!  :)

In Honor of our Veterans and their Families, on Veterans Day

       Vietnam Memorial 2

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to be in Washington DC in the new Pentagon chapel for a private dedication honoring those who horrifically died in the September 11th attacks at the Pentagon. Words cannot express the feelings of standing in that very spot where so many military personnel and innocent citizens were needlessly killed.  What a tragedy.  What an incredible loss!

During our time in DC, we visited many of the memorials which honored our fallen soldiers and those who served in wars.  I will never forget the seemingly unending list of those who died, carved into “The Wall” at the Vietnam War memorial.  The grief and cost of lives represented with those names was overwhelming. My heart broke for the families whose lives were forever changed. At another memorial, I read the words engraved in stone, “Freedom is Not Free.”  Memorial after memorial, these words became engraved on my heart.

As we set aside time nationally to celebrate and remember our veterans tomorrow, these memories come rushing back and cause me to pause.

Please join me in appreciation and prayer for our service men and women.

With deep gratitude, I want to thank those who put on the uniform, for your service and sacrifices.

We honor you, our veterans, who have proven your heroism and love of country time and time again.  You have defended our nation and you are an inspiration today, to those of us who enjoy a life of freedom.

Millions of you have died in service to America and millions more have been wounded and now  live with disabilities.  Billions more have lost family members and friends in horrific acts of war.

We in the United States of America will always be grateful for the noble sacrifices made by you and we honor and respect you for your service.

We can never adequately repay you.

YOU, our veterans, are living examples of the timeless and eternal truth that “Freedom is NOT Free.”

From the bottom of my heart, I thank you!

Please join me in praying for our service men and women and their families at Ft. Hood in Killeen and for our military serving us around the world.

::  This post is dedicated to my two dear uncles, Jim Bilderbeck and Walt Collins, who served in the military in times of war.  You are greatly admired and loved, and we thank you for your service.

Amazon is running a SUPER PROMOTION right now on a huge selection of Wii, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360 Video Games. When you spend $80 on select game titles, you will get a $40 Amazon.com credit.

This is the best deal I’ve seen all year on hundreds of top titles and a great way to get a head start on Christmas shopping (before things get picked-over).

Note that this offer ends TODAY, Saturday, 10/31/09.

Some of the top-ranked, family-friendly titles on the list include:

  • Wii Fit Plus (I give this new upgrade a two-thumbs up review)
  • Mario Kart Wii (with Wii Wheel)
  • Wii Sports Resort with Wii MotionPlus accessory
  • Lego Star Wars
  • Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10
  • Lego Batman Halo 3
  • Madden NFL
  • NBA 2K10
  • Batman: Arkham Asylum
  • LittleBigPlanet: Game of the Year Edition
  • Hundreds More!

ABOUT THE FRUGAL & FUN FORT WORTH WEEKEND EDITION ~
Each Friday, we post ideas for free (or almost free) weekend entertainment for you and your family. Here are this weekend’s tips…

Frugal Weekend Entertainment Option #1

It’s Fall Festival Time!  Have a Safe and Fun Halloween!

FallFestPumkins

It’s that time of year…hay rides, kids dressed up as their favorite characters, and enough candy to keep every dentist in business! I love fall.

Are you looking for a fun and safe way to celebrate the weekend’s fall festivities with your family?  Lots of churches, schools, and businesses in the community have put together fun festivals with safe places to trick or treat and play games.

A few FREE suggestions:

Central Market Stores, Saturday ~ October 31
Fort Worth Location • 2-5 p.m. (4651 West Freeway)
South Lake Location • 3-5:30 p.m. (1425 E. Southlake Blvd)

Start out at the main entrance and grab a map, then wind your way through the store, stopping at each Scavenger Hunt station to get a treat! Once you’ve scavenged all there is to hunt, make your way out to the patio for the Bean Bag Toss, Cookie Decorating, Cake Walk and Costume Parade. They’ll have prizes galore and tons of fun for the kids!  More details here.

Bass Pro Shops, Saturday, Friday & Saturday ~ October 30-31
Grapevine Location (2501 Bass Pro Drive)
Friday, October 30 • 4-7:00 p.m.
Trick or Treat throughout the store.  Kid’s costume parade at 6:00 p.m.
Saturday, October 31 • Noon-4:00 p.m.
Mask Decorating, Marshmallow Roasting, Dutch Oven Apple Cobbler
More details here.

Other local carnivals and festivals (lots of choices)
Click here for a nice list
of family-safe, harvest and fall festivals put on by churches and schools throughout Fort Worth and surrounding areas. Thanks to radio station KCBI 90.9 for putting together this great list.    Also, take a look at our previous post  FREE Pumpkin Carving Patterns & DFW Pumpkin Patch Locations for more ideas.

Frugal Weekend Entertainment Option #2

Dress Up Like a Burrito & Get a FREE Burrito from Chipotle!
Saturday, October 31, 6pm to closing

         Chipotle boorito

This makes me laugh.  If you will dress like a burrito (OR taco bowl OR salad) and head to Chipotle, you’ll get a free Burrito on October 31st.  I think the real entertainment will be “people watching” at Chipotle!

I’m still trying to figure out how you dress like a burrito/taco bowl/salad.  If you have any ideas, please share in the comments section of this blog post!
