The Nibbler is a snack-sized sandwich made of a classic Zaxby’s Chicken Finger topped with Zax Sauce and tucked into a toasted bun. No purchase is required to receive the FREE snack, but the offer is limited to one per person, per day to dine-in guests only.

November 9 – November 13: FREE Kidz Meal Week
Zaxby’s second deal offers a free Kidz Meal to children 10 and under. Kidz Meal options include the Kiddie Cheese (1/2 grilled cheese), Kiddie Finger (chicken fingers) and Kidz Nibbler (a snack-sized chicken finger sandwich). All Kidz Meals are served with Crinkle Fries and a Kidz Drink (milk, chocolate milk, apple juice, iced tea or Coca-Cola beverage). No purchase is required to receive the free Kidz Meal, but the offer is limited to one free Kidz Meal per child under 10, per day. Dine-in guests only. Children must be present when ordering.

Boo at the Zoo, Family Fun at The Fort Worth Zoo

Pop over to the Fort Worth Zoo for some “spooktacular” fun at the 18th Annual Boo at the Zoo Event. 

At 5:30 PM, the Zoo grounds turn into a haven of happy trails, pumpkin patches and treats at every turn. This year, the Fort Worth Zoo will bring back the popular Monster Bash show, as well as the Zoo’s very own Wild Wonders animal show (after all, this is Boo at the ZOO!). So put on your costumes and have a good time!  Some of the other scheduled activities include:

  • Carnival games
  • Professional pumpkin carvings
  • Treat stations throughout the Zoo
  • Play areas for the little ones
  • And animals galore … (only until dusk. Some of them might be afraid of the dark!)

Celebrate a Ft. Worth Institution at Kincaid’s Anniversary Party

Kincaid’s wants to say “thank you” to the community and their loyal customers for their support through the years by throwing a Texas-sized anniversary celebration!

The original landmark location of Fort Worth Kincaid’s Hamburgers will sell their famous award-winning hamburger lunch at 1960s prices.

This $2 Special  will include Kincaid’s original half-pounder, chips and a soft drink and will be served Saturday at the chain’s original flagship Camp Bowie location (promotion at this location only).

Where: Anniversary special served at the 4901 Camp Bowie store only.
When: Saturday, October 24, 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM
Cost:  $2 for a half-pound burger, chips, & Soft drink.  Kincaid’s will only be accepting cash on Saturday.   

Special Note: Because of the volume expected (a.k.a. potential chaos of people) on this day, Kincaid’s will only be serving this anniversary special, cooked medium well and stacked identically with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and onions  (customers can add their own condiments). Also, to handle the anticipated crowd, many streets around the area are closed on Saturday. Traffic Officers will help direct traffic and extra parking will be made available by surrounding businesses.

Experience Fort Worth’s Heritage at the Great Trail Drive
Along the Chisholm Trail, Saturday, October 10, 2009!

Saddle up for a true Texas trail drive along the Trinity River, following the historic Chisholm Trail in Fort Worth. The fun begins in the Fort Worth Stockyards at 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 with registration and breakfast, followed by the trail drive, led by Honorary Trail Boss and world champion cowboy, Larry Mahan. An authentic chuckwagon lunch will be provided as the drive progresses through downtown Fort Worth, along the Trinity River.

“The Great Trail Drive” benefits Rocky Top Therapy Center, a not-for-profit organization which provides therapeutic riding programs for children and adults with disabilities.

Frugal Weekend Entertainment Option #2

Celebrate Downtown Roanoke Festival!

 

 

 

The little town of Roanoke is quickly becoming the rising star of the Metroplex.  With a complete Downtown renovation, the recent addition of renowned hamburger joint, Twisted Root (see my recent post on this top hamburger spot), and…of course…Babe’s Chicken, it’s definitely a great spot to put on the list of places to visit!  And, this Saturday is a great time to make that happen!

From 10am-10pm, the city of Roanoke has planned a family friendly Celebrate Roanoke festival that includes:  live music, climbing walls, bounce houses, old-fashioned carnival games,  and various street entertainment like magicians, clowns, and old-town-gunfights.  The festivities will close with a fabulous fireworks display.

Frugal Weekend Entertainment Option #3

Enjoy a day in Dallas at the Texas State Fair – Week #3
Plan ahead and you can save on admission, too!

This is the 3rd weekend of the month-long Texas State Fair in Dallas. Be sure to check out our post from last week for a comprehensive savings guide to the fair (click here), which includes some helpful info, as well as a long list of ways to save on admission every day of the week (some days you can even get in FREE!).

The Texas State Fair runs now through October 18 and covers just about every area of interest. There are plenty of daily shows and literally hundreds of music performances throughout the month.  Check out the line up of concerts here and the full schedule of events here.

Grab a Bite at the Keller Eats Tailgate Party
Great Food. Live Music.

If you are headed to the Keller Stadium, for some “Friday Night Lights” (Central High School vs. Fossil Ridge High School), be sure and get there early for the Keller Eats Tailgate Party from 5:00-7:30 PM for food, live music, and more!  First United Methodist of Keller and several local restaurants will be serving yummy eats in benefit of a fantastic organization, Habitat for Humanity. 

Food options will include Mexican Food from local-owned Don Taco (one of my favorite eateries), BBQ from Dickey’s, and Pizza from Pollenzo’s (I hear they make great Pizza & are on my list to try soon!).

Side Note:  If you don’t get a chance to stop by the tailgate party, be sure to add Don Taco Fresh Mex (off Heritage Trace & Old Denton Rd) to your next restaurant outing.  Their prices are reasonable, and they make THE BEST Beef Fajita Quesadilla’s…hands down.  Be sure and thank them for their contribution to Habitat for Humanity, too!

The Greatest Hamburger Joints in Fort Worth (according to Texas Monthly)

Fun (& Greasy) Texas Fact of the Week: I recently discovered that the hamburger was invented in Texas (why don’t they teach these important details in Texas History?!?).  I must admit that I’m just not that surprised, as all culinary roads do, indeed, lead to Texas.  Yes. Yes they do. 

This brings me to my 2nd related discovery…

Texas Monthly recently ran a self-described “gastro-scientific inquiry into the finest burgers” and ranked the top 50 hamburger joints in Texas.  I was happy to see that 5 Fort Worth area burger spots landed on the list!  <<For full-disclosure to my fellow Fort Worthians, I was startled to learn that Kincaid’s didn’t rank in the top 50.  Outrage and heresy! ;) >> Read the full article here. 

Texas Monthly’s 2-thumbs-up results for the Fort Worth Area:

  • Dutch’s  – “The nicely seasoned half pound of meat is smothered with a pile of blue cheese and a tangle of bacon. A goodly spread of chi­potle mayo bridges the flavors, and fresh toppings seal the deal. The fries are fresh-cut and sprinkled with sea salt, and that just never, ever gets old.”  3009 S. University Dr
  • Twisted Root Burger Co –  “The beef patties—or buffalo, elk, and other game in season—are thick, the sweet-potato chips are fresh, and the spicy pickles are homemade, along with the root beer, ice cream, and chi­potle ketchup.”  Roanoke, 101 South Oak Street  (also in Dallas: Deep Ellum and Richardson)
  • Love Shack–  “Only in Texas would anyone grind together tenderloin and brisket, but the blend yields such an excellent ratio of fat to lean that it will gladden your taste buds. The whole barnyard participates in this mouth-pleaser: It not only comes with crispy applewood-smoked bacon but also a fried quail egg clinging to the patty. The tangy, house-made Love Sauce fuses the whole thing into a glorious mess you won’t soon forget.” FW Stockyards, 110 E. Exchange Ave, 2nd Location just opened at 817 Matisse)
  • Snuffer’s–  “The laid-back Greenville Avenue  restaurant original opened in 1978; since then more locations have sprouted… But what remains the same is the quality of that big, mouth-watering burger, particularly the cheesy-tangy Green Chile Swiss burger piled high with crisp shredded lettuce and fat tomato slices. And while it’s tough to beat the great fries, you’d be crazy not to order the cheddar fries at a place that’s bold enough to claim it invented them.”  Southlake Center, next to the Harkins Movie Theatre ( plus 7 other locations in DFW).
  • Fred’s Texas Café – “The Diablo Burger is Half a pound of ground beef, grilled and topped with taste bud–searing chipotles, heaped with Swiss cheese, and crowned with onion, pickles, tomato, lettuce, and mustard. The spicy elements play off perfectly against the cool and leafy ones; melted cheese provides the glue that holds it all together. Note: Don’t even think about wedging yourself into this popular, boisterous cafe and bar at rush hour.” 915 Currie Rd

  • Cliff Cafe – Brie And Granny Smith Burger (I may just have to trek to Dallas to try this swanky burger.  Brie makes everything better!)

The Frugal Hamburger:
Enjoy this perfect Outdoor weather with DIY Grilling

Most of these hamburger spots are not exactly what I would qualify as “frugal” venues.  To take a more cost-concious route, use these top ranked burgers to inspire your own grilled masterpiece at home and then use these directions for grilling the perfect hamburger (click here).   These no-detail-left-uncovered instructions for the hamburger pièce de résistance come from the cookbook, Mastering the Grill: The Owner’s Manual for Outdoor Cooking.

Fort Worth’s Fall Gallery Night

 

Ft. Worth’s Gallery Night is an “Open House” FREE event, across almost 50 venues, all celebrating the visual arts and the community’s cultural richness in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.  Participating art venues include all types, from the legendary Fort Worth galleries of the west side to the chic showrooms of the trendy, up and coming south side. 

Take a stroll through participating galleries, museums, retail businesses, and area restaurants, and mingle with the many artists featured during this community event.  Many locations are hosting live music and light h’ors d’oeuvres. Hosted by the Fort Worth Art Dealer’s Association (FWADA).

When: Saturday, September 12, 2009, 2 p.m. – 9 p.m.

Art in the Garden, Fort Worth Botanic Garden Art Show and Sale

Botanic Gardens

Enjoy the beauty of the FW Botanic Gardens while taking in works from regional artists at Art in the Garden. This Annual Art Show and Sale is held in conjunction with Fall Gallery Night, 2009.  Art will be displayed in the Deborah Beggs Moncrief Garden Center close to the main entrance to the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens.

 Jazz By The Boulevard

With two stages of continuous jazz music serving up national headliners such as Chris Botti, The Blind Boys of Alabama and George Clinton,  this year’s lineup is sure to please even the most discriminating jazz fan. Also featuring a Cooking Carnivalè pavilion with chef-taught seminars and samplings by top area chefs. A juried art show and activities for kids complete the event!

Gallery Night at the Downtown Library
& Grand Opening Abraham Lincoln Travelling Exhibit

The FW Public Library Foundation brings a new perspective to Gallery Night by making it the grand opening of “Abraham Lincoln: A Man of His Time, a Man for All Times,” a national traveling exhibit that examines Abraham Lincoln’s life, accomplishments, and legacy. The Downtown, Central Library is the ONLY STOP in Texas for the exciting collection. 

Guests during Gallery Night will be the first to view the Abraham Lincoln Collection from the Dow Foundation as well as The Pate Lincoln Collection. Gallery night will also feature the Frontier Brigade Band, an 18-member band that celebrates the Mid-Nineteenth Century American Brass Band Movement by utilizing period musical instruments and sporting authentic period dress.  Refreshments will be served throughout the evening.
