The Airfare Wars Are On! American, Southwest, & United Offer $48 One-Way to Lots of Destinations!

Great Deals on Airfare To Over 5,000 Routes!
If you watched even a little bit of  TV this week, you probably saw
one of Southwest’s commercials for its big new sale. Not to be
outdone, United, American, and a handful of other carriers have all
matched that sale with almost identical promotions of their own.

All promotions combined, more than 5,000 routes have been discounted
with fares starting at $48 one-way. AirTran, Alaska, Continental, Delta,
Frontier, JetBlue, and US Airways are also in the price-war mix with
unannounced (but similar) fares on their sale routes.

Note: To get the special pricing, you will need to book by
Monday, December 13, 2010 , for January 4- March 9  flights.

Details, Details
How: Go to American‘s, Southwest‘s, and United‘s sale and
    compare prices for the destination and dates of interest. Seats
    and availability are limited, so being flexible with your travel
    dates and times will likely help you find the lowest fares as you
    comparison shop.
When: Special fares are good for travel Jan. 4 to Mar. 9, 2011. 
    You must book by Monday, December 13, 2010 to get the
    special fare. Book as soon as possible for best travel dates
    and options.

Just Announced: $98 Roundtrip American Airlines Fares PLUS Other Airlines Compete

American Airlines has announced a sale with travel fares from
$98 roundtrip.

Destinations include Chicago, Las Vegas, Miami, and others. Six other airlines
are matching or beating American’s offer, so shop around to take advantage of
the competition. American has not listed a deadline, but this sale could end
at any time.

Frugal Travel Alert: Last-Minute Thanksgiving Day Sale on Southwest & Other Airline Carriers

Just in time for that last-minute trip home
Southwest Airlines has announced another Thanksgiving sale with dates encompassing the holiday period (travel is valid Tuesday, November 24, through Wednesday, December 2).

Southwest’s sale fares may not seem like  “bargain basement” pricing at first glance, but in actuality they are reasonably priced for last minute travel during this high-demand travel period.

Several carriers, including AirTran, Delta, Northwest, and US Airways, are also joining in and competing with their great deals as well—in one case $196 lower—on more than half of the routes we compared.

 A few more tips for getting the best price on your air travel: 

  •  If your dates are flexible, keep in mind the cheapest travel dates (learn more here).
  • When you’re browsing for a specific itinerary, make certain to pay attention to the advance-booking period. In many cases, the airline’s restrictions require you book 14 or more days in advance, thereby indirectly blacking-out the Thanksgiving travel period.
  • Compare prices among reliable travel consolidators like Travelocity, Orbitz, or Priceline.  
  • Always compare fares at the Airlines’ direct sites.  You can sometimes get better schedules & deals by going direct to the airlines.

Cheapest Days for Thanksgiving Travel

It’s not too late!  If you’ve put off booking your Thanksgiving flight arrangements, you can still get cheaper fares. New data suggests you can save hundreds of dollars simply by choosing specific travel days during the holiday period.

The cheapest days to fly are:

Depart: November 23 or 26

Return: December 1

The most expensive days to fly are:

Depart: November 22 or 25

Return: November 29

By adjusting your schedule to fit the cheapest travel dates, the average Thanksgiving fare drops by up to $179 before taxes and fees.

The Airfare Wars Are On! American Airlines Offers $25 One-Way to Lots of Destinations, ENDS TODAY!

Yesterday, we reported Southwest Airlines’ Low Fare Sale (read the post here).  Not to be outdone, American Airlines joined the low-fare boxing match with their deals…some as low as $25 One-way!  Note that these offers end at midnight TODAY (10/29) and are for travel Dec. 2 – Dec. 16, 2009 and Jan. 5 – Feb. 10, 2010.

After comparing each airlines’ fares for a few cities, we’ve made the following pros/cons general observations: 

  • Southwest Airlines: provides the better overall deals on their sale.  Make sure you are OK with their general admission approach to no-assigned seating, though (sometimes difficult if you are traveling with children). 
  • American Airlines: values aren’t quite as good as SWA, but they do provide more discounted options by providing a wider variety of destinations and departure/return times in their sale (and you do get an assigned seat when you buy your ticket).

Tickets need to be purchased TODAY, October 29, 2009, 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time to take advantage of the special pricing.

SouthWest Airlines’ Amazing 72-Hour Sale: $50 ROUNDTRIP to Many Destinations!

If you are headed anywhere SouthWest Airlines flies over the next couple of months, you may want to check out their airfare deals during their 72 Hour Sale (great deals like $50 for roundtrip to San Antonio from Dallas).   Special fares are for travel Dec. 2 – Dec. 16, 2009 and Jan. 5 – Feb. 10, 2010.

Tickets need to be purchased by October 29, 2009, 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time to take advantage of the special pricing.
