One of our favorite annual events, Main St. Fort Worth Arts Festival is finally here! This juried art fest showcases over 200 of the nation’s finest artists and is staged around the streets of downtown (with the new Sundance Square Plaza acting as the main hub). The festival also features over 300 performances throughout the weekend, including live concerts in just about every music genre — from R&B to country to jazz.  Even the Fort Worth Symphony will be performing (more info below).

It’s a family friendly event with an enormous variety of amazing art, savory food, performance artists, kids activities, and street performers.

:: Celebrity Softball Double Header and Concert Benefiting
Wounded Warrior and Snowball Express.

Saturday, The Airpower Foundation will present Salute to the Warrior, a celebrity softball double-header and concert that will benefit the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team and Snowball Express. Softball teams will be made up of celebrities as well as former and current professional athletes from Major League Baseball and the National Football League.

Some of the athletes participating are Patrick Crayton, Cory Procter and Isaiah Stanback formerly of the Dallas Cowboys as well as Kevin Mench from the Texas Rangers, and many more from the New Orleans Saints, San Francisco 49’ers, Washington Redskins, Baltimore Ravens, St Louis Rams, and Atlanta Falcons. The event features parachute jumpers as well as the opportunity to meet, the athletes and heroes. Country music recording star Matt Snook and comedian Bobby Henline will perform after the games.

FREE Drawing From the Collection classes for kids:  Two sessions of this free program for children are offered, one for ages 5 to 8 and one for ages 9 to 12. Each session is led by an artist who takes participants through informal drawing exercises that relate to works in the Modern’s galleries. Oh I love a parade! Over 100,000 people will line the streets of downtown Fort Worth to watch the “All Western Parade” and to celebrate the opening of the 2014 Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. This traditional event is held each year and boasts being the largest western themed parade, as well as the longest 100% non-motorized (no cars) parade in the world. The parade will feature over 4,000 participants including covered wagons, horses, more than 1,000 head of livestock, and of course lots of cowboys!

Where: The parade starts in front of the Tarrant County Courthouse (Downtown at Weatherford and Main Streets), turns right on Main towards the Convention Center, and loops back to the Courthouse on Houston St.  Click here to view the new 2014 parade route.

$1 Wednesdays Fort Worth Bike Share B-Cycle

Try out the Fort Worth Bike Sharing program for a buck! Each Wednesday in January, Fort Worth B-Cycle 24-hour memberships will only cost $1 (regularly $8).

To participate, go to any of the bike stations  to purchase the membership and check out your bike for $1.  When you are done, drop it off at any of the stations.   Do note that usage fees will still apply after 30 minutes.

There are over 30 bike station locations in Fort Worth (14 stations in Downtown Fort Worth, 7 in the Cultural District, 9 around the Magnolia/S. Main area, and 3 in the TCU area) ~ find available stations on these maps.

The Modern Art Museum ~ Fort Worth Kids Drawing Program

FREE Drawing From the Collection classes for kids:  Two sessions of this free program for children are offered, one for ages 5 to 8 and one for ages 9 to 12. Each session is led by an artist who takes participants through informal drawing exercises that relate to works in the Modern’s galleries. Children under the age of six must be accompanied by an adult during the program. Bring a sketchbook and pencils. Attendance is limited; early arrival is encouraged. A sign-up sheet is located at the information desk.

FREE Drawing From the Collection class for adults:  Learn with local artists as they lead free, informal basic drawing classes in the galleries. This class is open to adults at all skill levels. Bring a sketchbook and pencils. Registration is not required, but a sign-in sheet is available at the information desk

Workshops teach children do-it-yourself skills, tool safety and instill a sense of pride and accomplishment.  All kids get to keep their craft, receive a FREE certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorative pin.  All workshops are free, but you should probably show up early to insure you have a kit for your little ones.

About the movie: Elizabeth defies her wealthy parents by running off and marrying a young man of humble prospects, and her parents have not spoken to her since – even though the couple lives in a rooming house nearby, they are struggling financially, and she is pregnant.
